I know its not a job, but training, but its the nearest place I could find to put it.

Right I'm temped to do this.

http://www.port.ac.uk/courses/engineering/beng-hon...

I already have a HND (Computer aided engineering), 2 city and guilds in AutoCAD, and a few nvq's in Engineering operations. I've worked in Machine shops doing toolmaking (manual turning, milling, grinding, welding etc),and a good few years as a CNC setter and programmer (mainly turning), and a wee bit of drawing here and there (auto cad and inventor). This summer I will have been in the industry for 11 years (I'm 27, I started working in engineering straight out of school).

But is it worth doing, will I end up with a better job and better wages? Plus I don't really want to stop working either, So I would have to study around a 39 hour working week (But I might be able to cut it down a bit), hence the whole distance learning thing sounds pretty appealing.

I know there are a good few Engineers on here, but I wouldn't mind hearing the opinions / experience of anyone who came from the shop floor and went up the ladder so to speak. Or about the degree itself.

I imagine the right degree would add a lot to your CV. It's been my experience that potential employers look at my degree qualification on my CV, despite it being years since I went to uni. However, I'm not an engineer. Also:

  • A degree should either give you useful new skills or add prestige to your CV (ideally both!). How does Portsmouth's compare to its competitors?
  • This is a distance learning course, taught using Portsmouth's 'virtual learning environment'. As you'll have two years immersed in this online environment, their online teaching had better be good. Can you see what their online learning looks like? Can you try it out before signing up? Some uni's have good online learning, others are rubbish.
  • How good is the support from tutors? What do previous students say about support from tutors? Good support is critical in a distance learning course.
