How does home to base travel expense claims work?

Are you automatically entitled to claim this?

What's the mileage limit?

What's the rate per mile?

Is it the Law or up to your employer to offer reimbursement for this expense?

Currently live 60 miles from my base but don't claim any home to base mileage.

I used to do a similar commute and wasnt entitled to anything. I'm only allowed to claim milage for any travelling within work hours. Commuting to and from work is not included.

My solution was Move closer to work. I'm now 4 miles away.

It's HMRC who get cross if you claim it, and the company is simply following that. I don't suppose you have a customer ste two miles down the road? Those can be very handy indeed smile

You cant claim home to base, thats considered a normal expense for anyone. You take it off any mileage claims if you travel from home direct to customers

The only time you ever get paid when you leave your home, is if your home is your contractual work location

Or the company have forced you to move to another site, in which case for a limited amount of time, they can pay expenses for travel over and above your previous commute. Similar in some ways that they may pay for relocation expenses.

If you travel a considerable distance from home to base ask your employer to change your contract. What you want is for your principle place of employment to be your home address.

Sorry, but no. Eric has already debunked this in another thread. It's about where you normally go, not what your contract says. If your normal place of work is your office then you can't claim that, regardless of what lie your contract states....

I used to work remotely and had a contract that said I worked from home, so I was fine to claim the fuel and sustenance allowance travelling to the office, but if you're just commuting then you're out of luck I'm afraid

I tried to help an employee out by changing her contract to home worker. She then had to manage her diary very carefully in order that she was in the office less that 50% of the time.
