I'm currently employed by royal mail on a 28hr contract but I've been offered a job in a workshop to help restore classic cars on my day off during the week plus a half day (so about 15hrs per week). The boss is wanting everything on the books for insurance purposes etc.

What type of tax bracket/payments would I expect to pay on this ~15hrs and how would it effect my tax and NIC payments through Royal Mail?

Cheers.

You will be treated as an employee on the garage payroll - as a second job, you will be on a BR code meaning a flat 20% income tax will be deducted. The NI is also treated as a seperate matter, meaning that you can earn £155 per week without paying anything and thereafter 12% up to £815 per week.

For example, if you were paid £300 for your 1.5 days, you would have deductions of £60 income tax and £17.40 Class 1 NIC, leaving £222.60 net.

This has no interaction with your primary employment.

Great stuff, cheers Sumo. As long as I don't end up getting taxed more overall than I'll be bringing home from the 2nd job I'll be happy.
