I hope nobody minds my posting this here (a little cheeky), but this is a genuine job my company is recruiting for and it is perfect for someone who has always wanted to work with cars, but has never managed to crack into the industry:

____________________________________________________________________________

CAR FINDER POSITION

£22,000

Based in Ealing, West London

ESSENTIAL CRITERIA
- Love of cars
- Great communication skills
- Good negotiator

  • *Previous motor industry experience is NOT required***

COMPANY DETAILS

Based in Ealing, west London, Palmdale was established 8 years ago with one goal - to enable ANYBODY to get a fair deal on buying a new or used car.

Everything we do revolves around this principle and our clients are typically people who do not feel comfortable buying a car themselves because they fear they will either end up with a bad car, a bad deal… or both.

Additionally, some of our clients are busy professionals who just do not have the time to source a car for themselves. Our goal is always to secure the best possible car at the best possible price without the client doing ANY of the work.

You can find out more about how we do this on our website – www.palmdale.co.uk

THE ROLE

The role itself is split into two parts.

First, we need someone who can complete a very comprehensive car search given the specific criteria set by our clients.

You will need to search out every car available in the UK, enquire with the dealers or sellers of these cars to ensure that they are of the best possible quality and negotiate on the price.

After that you will need to pick the best 3 to 4 cars, and put them into an easily-readable shortlist.

Don’t worry, we’ve been doing this for a while and have processes in place to help you start and can even offer some tips on how best to negotiate.

But it’s important to be aware that around 50% of your time will be spent on the telephone to car dealers and sellers.

The second part of the role is less exciting, but crucial administration work. This will involve a variety of tasks such as car data checks, organising supplementary work on the cars you find, invoicing and more basic office management tasks.

CRITERIA

The person we are looking for should have the following skills… in this order too:

1) You must be a car nut – all Palmdale employees are car-obsessed. But as well as being happy to talk about Ferraris, Bentleys and classic Mustangs, you need to have a genuine love for all cars… even the Volkswagen Polo (of which we source quite a few!).

2) Great communication – you will be speaking with all manner of car dealers, some of whom will tell you the truth, some of whom will not. It’s imperative that you have the ability to read between the lines and find the truth.

3) You must be very detail orientated – the devil is in the detail, and one tiny misinterpretation of a seemingly inconsequential bit of data can make the difference between a good car and a bad car.

4) Negotiation – we’re paid to save our clients money so it’s important that you can bargain hard when necessary.

5) Organisation – you will be handling a variety of different projects at different times, often under pressure

6) Process orientated – everything we do is governed by a process that will need to be followed precisely.

7) IT savvy - our research is mostly internet-based and we use Word, Excel and html coding in which we would expect you to be skilled

It is important for all candidates to appreciate that there is one thing we don’t need – motor industry experience. This is a rare chance to get into the car industry without car industry experience.

By joining Palmdale you will be joining a small but growing team of car nuts. We will need you to be committed, tenacious, robust, enthusiastic, flexible and have a can-do attitude. In return we offer an exciting and supportive work environment… and one where you get to work with cars!

APPLICATION PROCESS

To apply, please send a copy of your CV along with your answer (in no more than 100 words) to the following question:

“If you could arrive at an interview in a car that most represented your personality, which one would it be and why?”

Please email both these items to jobs@palmdale.co.uk or submit via this website.

The closing date for applications is 17:00 Monday 27 July.

We regret that due to the number of applications that we are expecting for this role, we will only be contacting short-listed individuals. I’m very sorry but we will not be able to answer any queries regarding this role directly and can only accept applications as described above.

The first stage will be a telephone interview, following which, if you are successful, we will ask you to complete an online personality questionnaire and to attend a half-day assessment process at our premises in west London on a set date at the start of August.

It might, but getting paid to browse AT/PH/C&C? If I was in that area, I'd definitely be applying!

Only really looking at cars on websites and talking to dealers on the phone. From what I've seen on PH the approach of calling dealers and sellers to discuss price without viewing the car is not welcomed very often.

I can't imagine a worse job for a car nut than 50% admin and 50% phoning up car dealers saying "Yo bruv, wot's your best price on your Corolla?"

Thanks! For the right person it's an awesome job... but I'll admit it's one for the heart, not necessarily the pocket.

You would be amazed at the difference once you announce that you're 'in the trade' compared to a 'retail buyer'. Still baffles me that dealers respond SO differently...

Indeed. I worked out I'd need that much every week to live in London in the manner to which I'm accustomed to living in Yorkshire on a little more than that much every year!

You'd need £22k a week to live in London to match your Yorkshire standard of living?

I think this is an awesome opportunity for someone.. I would have bitten your hand off a couple of years ago.

Just remember, this is an entry level role with no experience required.

laugh

I wouldn't do that for £22k a month, for me it sounds truly horrific.

I would think the job offers £22k basic with a bonus from each sale to encourage enthusiastic buying at the very best price. I would assume there would be monthly cash incentives for targets met and a monthly group share of the pot if the group sells above target.

This should elevate the salary to around £60k average with an extra annual bonus based on company profits and good promotion potential to encourage the best negotiators to apply.

Or I could be completely wrong and the company hope that the ‘car nut’ they employ doesn’t mind the £22k salary cos he’s a ‘car nut’.

That's a lot of assumptions, you must be hard work at interviews. It offers 22k pa, not ote 60k pa.

And spend over half of your wages to live in a 1 bedroom flat in the area? http://www.rightmove.co.uk/property-to-rent/proper... (cheapest if you ignore studios and bedsits)
