I went through the SC thing about 25 years ago – it took 6 weeks then.
Again about 2 years ago-then left the place.
Then went through it again – 8 months ago then left just before it arrived – bad planning on my part…
Now going through it all over again…
How long does it take?
For some sites it’s about 6 weeks – Aldermaston
For others its 12 weeks – like me- just now, unless HR get involved…….

Have you had it before?
Have you done anything which takes some explaining in the mean time? Gone to Russia, Iran? China?
Who do you work for?
What type of work do they do?
How urgent is it for you to become SC? – It can be done in 4 weeks.

Once you have left your current SC role, back to normal non-SC work, your SC lasts for a calendar year (and not ONE day over! – ask me how I know…) so if you get another SC role within that year, then your SC will continue. If not, then its start all over again. Although the new clearance should come through more quickly.
You get sent a link to a portal which asks you loads of questions, mainly just about you and your parents, partner(s) maybe siblings, are you a dodgy sort type of thing? It can take some time to get all the information together to fill it all in.

DV? Hmm it depends upon what you are doing
A mate does serious things with nuclear reactors and looking after the uranium – as you do, and another works in RAF command so this is a bit “merged” from them. although as said above, they can do this for SC work if they find "anomalies...
As I understand it – its questions about
• You, your mates and family, work colleagues, ex work colleagues , the possibilities are endless.
• What you do in your spare time?
• Are you a bit pervy? They have your browsing history too.
• Financially unreliable? bankruptcy, CCJ’s etc…
• Where do you go on holiday?
• “They” may well have your previous 5 years phone bills, Bank accounts, Trips in and out of the country.
I hear it’s a 3 hour interview and it’s uncomfortably personal.
Others will have been asked different questions dependent upon what answers they got elsewhere. They will ask questions about you to your previous employers, your personal referees. If they start to have doubts, then the net gets cast far and wide. If it looks as though you are going to be too much hassle, then you simply don’t get it. I hear about 40% fail for one reason or another. Whether this is true or not – I have no idea.

I was DV'd back in the 80's although it was called PV then. It took six months probably because I have a cousin who I had only met once who travelled regularly to China as he is a Professor of Oriental art. The interview was very in depth and they knew all there was to know about me. I passed ok even after admitting that I'd smoked a bit of cannabis at college. Even back then they didn't mind what you got up to sexually or otherwise (legal-ish of course!) as long as you were open about it to them. They look for things that could be used to blackmail or entrap you. Pre-internet then though, I'd guess there's much more to trawl through nowadays.

No they don't. Unless they somehow hack in and do it remotely.

Loads of exaggeration and scaremongering in this thread to be honest.

The application for DV is pretty much the same as SC but with additional information about finances and close family.

They interview you and at least one of your references. Questions are simply to determine if you've been honest and to work out if you would be vulnerable to bribery (closet homosexual, lots of debt etc).

I heard that normaly there is no face to face interview for SC but there is one for DV clearance. Is this true?

Do you have to give only last 5 years details for SC?

Yep.

Don't know anyone who has had an interview for SC.

Pretty sure everyone is interviewed for DV.

New employer will sponser me for SC as i don't think i qualify for DV yet.

If some how i don't get SC then my contract will be terminated. Don't know if its worth taking risk and relocate with family for this new job.

@OP, may I ask, to which category of SC do you refer? Is it for a specific position/sector. I ask as SC for (for example) Cat A prisons takes a fair while. I have known it to take over six months.

Mmm I had Secret clearance in my first defence job out of university - in Australia in the 1990s. (I'm a Aus UK dual national). Then moved into oil and gas. Was thinking of going back into defence in the UK for a couple of years to keep my skills in other industries up and also because oil in in a downturn.

So for UK clearance for sure nobody looks at your computer? My hard drive is full of porn!!!

I have security clearance to Secret level and hold British and Irish passports. I am related to some noted Irish Republican terrorists of the early C20 (I kid you not). CSB, eh?

I think you probably mean you have Security Check clearance; in which case it's possible for you to see TS information.

You may be right, me no know terminology very gud. I get to see some Secret Squirrel stuff, but then I have to have a brain wipe. I was hoping that I might also get taught Ninja Kung Fu techniques, but this didn't happen, and I can't expense the Martinis. Filling the form in took ages, and it took several months for the clearance to come through.

I think having paid for a 1980s Italian snotters from your own pocket would have made them want to scrutinise your sanity before giving clearance, BV.
