A month ago I went to an interview and was told immediately I had a second interview. During the interview I talked about how as the company was moving from a small to medium enterprise they needed a half and half tactical/strategic person in the role and that was me. I didn’t get to have a second interview however, as they redesigned the role and I did not get an interview.

So as you can imagine I have even less confidence in recruitment agents as during the delay the agent was saying there was no issues.

I am now in a situation for a job where it is the perfect job for me. I have got a second interview. The Senior recruitment agent went on holiday and the intern manage to fluff the second interview. I was then told it was rearranged for end of July, and I am now being told the interview is in August. Every time I phone up, I am told by the recruitment agent that ‘companies should understand if the delay means they lose candidates’.

How do you go about finding out the truth and keeping the recruitment consultant on side as well?

Try not to make the assumption the recruitment agent and the company looking to hire are in cahoots.

Sometimes those companies string the agent along, telling them every thing is ok, while they make a decision.

classic, it sounds as though the agent is passing you on what they have been asked to by their client. People go on holiday / diaries get full / meetings etc etc etc. What you must remember is that the agency will get a fee for placing you so they have a vested interested in you getting the job, assuming you are the only candidate they have in process.

It maybe that this hire isn't top priority for the client, which won't be what you or the agency want to hear but it maybe the case.

Nothing is stopping you from applying for other roles either and i'd suggest you do that as it sounds to me like this process could take a while.

Good luck with your search.

The answer to your question is to ask the hiring manager directly.

It feels like that Hoolio

But what I don't understand is the 'Companies will lose candidates' Conversation which happens every time I ring up.

P.s. I am only ringing once a week, I am not totally hassling them.

I am currently seeking employment and have been applying to some roles advertised by recruitment agencies. They are useless and not worth the time or effort.

Just to counter this argument, I got my last role through an agency. I applied for one role through the agency and got it! The agency were transparent, communicative and professional throughout the process. Depends who the agency have roles with and whether there is a good match? - obviously!

Perhaps it's your poor attitude that is holding you back. Looking back at some of your recent posts you've been offered help by PH'ers who are Agents and you haven't bothered to follow up with them.

Once you change your attitude i'm sure your prospects will improve.

I've just managed to secure my next role (permanent) through a recruiter who was bloody brilliant so they're not all bad.

I have a list of recruiters who I will deal with and one I will not deal with nor even respond to their emails/voicemails are they are bloody useless.

It does appear to be luck of the draw when it comes to dealing with recruitment agencies & agents. Looking at some of the chimps who try to connect to me on LinkedIn and their backgrounds, it appears that certain agencies have very low employment standards.

As said not all bad. I have dealt with some exceptional ones over the years. Most however are complete toss pots.

The answer is that most of them spend all day lying.

However, it is often the case that both parties they are speaking to are lying too.

For example the hiring company is telling them that they have budget for the role when they haven't, the applicant is saying that they are not looking at any other jobs, and they are ready to resign from their current role, when they're not.

I'm not a Recruitment Consultant but have worked on projects at a couple of Agencies and found 'sitting on the other side of the fence' highly insightful.

So is there a way to get to the truth? Without totally pissing off the recruitment consultant?

IN a word, no. Either the client has changed their priorities and hasn't told the agency or the agency knows the client isn't interested in you but isn't telling you.

As I said earlier, it's probably a good idea to start looking for other roles and you can put this one on the back burner, if it comes off, great, if not you'll get something else anyway.

Good luck!

Just to let you all know. The company finally came back and straight after the second interview I got a job offer which I have taken.

So great for me to hang in there!
