I have been having a look at this. I think a decent photo is needed as I don't currently have one. I also think the problem is my profile just doesn't show up that much. I am ranked 10th in my company, out of probably on 15 of them who are on linkedIn ( I am also the only one without a photo) for profile views. Need to up my activity a bit I guess.

I will probably be complaining in a couple of months about being hounded by recruiters with irrelevant jobs :-)

I've only been on it for a month or two and am not getting any profile hits at all. In my case I think it is because I live in a remote location and it could be that recruiters think I won't relocate.

Seriously, it's not worth it. The amount of bks on LinkedIn, so much white noise. It's only use to me is to find contacts at companies I want to approach to sell in to. I've never had a contact from LinkedIn that I think would have any benefit to me at all. If you want recruiters to contact you, put your CV on a jobs board or send it to them, you'll get better approaches.

I actually got my current job via LI. Admittedly that was a direct approach from the company not via a recruiter but it does work.
I've had other very good quality contacts as well but there is a lot of white noise.

If a recruiter contacts you via a LinkedIn message, they have paid to be able to do so and therefore it at least worth reading.

If they simply offer to connect, chances are all they are doing is trying to gain access to your connection list to further their pool of potential candidates.

Neither is really what I would call being headhunted though.

Definitely this. I lock my contacts list down so only mutual connections are visible to others.

Just checked your profile - it's a shame you are not based in London. I'd have done you a headshot for nothing. I used to work as a photographer and realised I still have 25 grands worth of equipment in a drawer. I recently did one for my partner - within 2 days she had gone from 130something connection, to 500 plus. I'm not sure if it was the pic or the new job title. My ego was inflated when her boss tried getting me to do the whole department for them after seeing hers though - even offered to pay me, but I don't role like that anymore with a camera.

A minefield of choices!

Do you go serious (maybe in front of a lectern, or giving a presentation on a stage?)
Black and white?
Pouting? (works for female recruitment chicks)
Smiling/laughing? (hey, I'm a fun guy and I love my work!)
Wacky camera angle? (seen quite a few photos posed on a Tube escalator)

Your pretty lucky then, these "headhunters" are pretty scummy, changing your CV (I send my CV out as a PDF and often they will demand it be in word format), lying about salary or the particulars of the role, refuse to tell you the name of the company that they are representing so that you can find further details, refuse to send any details in writing and always want to spend hours on the phone 'managing your expectation' and once you do finally pry out of them what the role is its for a job that you don't have the training for or the experience.

I often have them hang up on me when I tell them either how much I earn or my salary expectation...
