Has anyone made the step from contracting back into permy work?

I am considering making the move for a number of reasons and would be interested to hear other peoples experiences. Did you regret it? Did you suffer financially? On reflection was it a good move longer term?, if so why?

Also curious.

Well there's a funny thing. I went contract to perm some years ago and progressively hated it; however this was more to do with the company I was working for than the process. Eventually left and am currently in my first contract for about 10 years, but there are suggestions already about me going perm.

I think it depends on a lot of things; principally, do you like the job/the company/the culture, but then you have to factor in your age and the effect of pensions, healthcare, unavoidable (age-related!) sickness, etc.

No straight answer!

I did it earlier this year - but was then made redundant almost immediately - so have ended up back on contract wobble

I did for 5 years at approx 80% of my contract rate which equated to about 65% take home but with the benefits of holiday etc. I went back contracting earlier this year mainly for the ability to be able choose the projects I work on rather than financial reasons. Was bored of having to do support, a lack of interesting new projects, and the general company politics that you don't have to put up with as contractor. So if you do go permie I would suggest you look very closely at all aspects of the role not just the financials.

Interesting thread as I've just been offered a permanent role in my current contract.

The money would be similar, but even then I'm not convinced I want to go back to perm. I actually like the thought of a completely fresh start with each new contract. It also means I don't get wound up so much when things are bad as I can distance myself from the day to day stuff.

I've declined the offer but do wonder if its the right choice.

I have the best of both worlds.

I was contracting and have been in the past working for the likes of HSBC, Citigroup, etc...

Last stint was for over 2 years, but was working a hell of a lot (12+ hours a day), but I was lead on the whole development of the platform for the department and left shortly after it went live.

Then I got pissed off taking 4/5 interviews per job, doing anything up to 6/7 technical tests a week, I was contacted about a relative unknown company (to me) and they wanted experienced hires, so I applied. Permie work and the wages is over 1/2 what I was getting on days rates, but then I need to factor in the whole package and holidays so it works out well.

Im now effectively back contracting again, so can pick and choose my jobs as this is a Consultancy role, however as I have been security checked and done the technical tests, my 'interviews' consist of a coffee with the Project owner that usually lasts for 30-45 minutes and that is it, we gauge each other to see if I want to work there and if they think I would be a good fit.

They have offices all over the world, so if I were to be needed in Europe, I would be able to do the work there and use one of the company properties and stay there free of charge.

I do know they are looking so if you would like to know more, PM me.

Its in the Finance world using mainly microsoft tech stack, but they need a whole range of folks from Lawyers, support, Business, geeks, etc... mainly based in London, but have offices in NY, Sing, Paris, etc, etc...

Just had exactly the same proposition in my current contract.

For purely work related reasons I couldn't do it mainly due to the politics of a permanent role. The people I work with are constantly bhing and I can't be arsed with all that. Secondly, I believe that once a permie my role would change into a Jack of All Trades rather than a Master of One, which is related to the politics really.

Furthermore I can't stand management reviews, training courses and all the general Corporate flannel that companies insist on these days.

My pay would also drop considerably as the company doesn't pay well and the clincher for me is that there is no more security in a permie role these days than there is as a contractor.

Add in the benefits of changing roles regularly, keeping fresh, constantly learning and taking on new challenges that a Contractor has then it's a no brainer for me.

Considered Consulting as its like contracting with the security?

Du1point8 - I haven't had this opportunity as yet, but can see you have a point.

This is a reminder to PM you later biggrin

Having looked at what 2016 will probably bring from my Accountant following the Budget... I'm seriously considering going Permie when this ends.
