I've worked for the same company for the past 14 years and they have now said that I need to show them my passport to verify who I am ! can they make me show them my passport.

Yes or other valid form of identification. Not sure why you are being obtuse.

Under the nationality & asylum act your employer has to perform right to work checks. This should be done before someone is employed but it sounds like they are now filling in gaps were things were missed when you started.

No, you can quit instead. Not being stty, but you'd have to have a good reason not to provide them with some ID when asked.

Your birth certificate & official proof of NI number will suffice.

I wouldn't bet on it - there is a guy who lives in the same town as me, who has a NI number, and was being threatened with being kicked out of the country, and the pub he worked in was being fined for employing an illegal immegrant, all because his mother had not applied for dual nationality when he was born, (American father/English Mother).

Didn't get settled until our MP got involved.

are you a british citizen ? UK or British Forces Overseas Birth certificate ( ideally long form and original) or your naturalisation / citizenship papers

Yes I'm fully British. Born here. Just don't have a passport. Don't want to go abroad so don't need one.

I guess a birth certificate would suffice. There just seems to be an annoying assumption these days that everyone must have a passport.

99.9% of the populous would be able to lay their hands on their passport much quicker than their birth certificate.

Worst case.... stump up the money and get one.
