Reason's for leaving a job
Discussion
Is it the done thing when being interviewed to tell the interviewer(s) that one of the reason's you want to leave your current role is because the company you work for is poor? lol.
Has anyone ever done this? How was it taken?
I never have, even though I have wanted to, but always worried that it would be seen negatively.
The closest I've come was to say that I wanted to work for a company who would invest in me as a person.

No it is not.You have to say why you wish to progress your career, face new challenges etc..
You do not moan about your old employer.
Repeat after me.
'The reason I am leaving is that I feel I have gone as far as I can with the current company, I'm looking for a new challenge that excites me and has the prospect of career progression, which after looking at your company, it ticks all the boxes that I'm looking for to fulfil this new challenge I require'
If asked to elaborate, then say that you enjoyed working for the old company, but you feel its time to expand your knowledge... blah, blah, blah....
Anything but... 'It was a crap company and I hated working for the, would rather slit my wrists then go back'

If the people are interviewing you are experienced at interviewing, they will have heard all the answers and in my experience some will push you for the real reason.
My advice would be to learn a few on the common answers. This way, when you push them you have it covered.
As others have said, try not to criticize your current or old company. It can be very difficult.

Completely ignore that horsest.'The reason I am leaving is that I feel I have gone as far as I can with the current company, I'm looking for a new challenge that excites me and has the prospect of career progression, which after looking at your company, it ticks all the boxes that I'm looking for to fulfil this new challenge I require'
The worst thing you can possibly hear as an interviewer are such blatantly pre-prepared answers. You may as well not answer at all because it is clear you aren't sincere.

this x1000.By all means state reasons such as wanting progression, or feeling like its time to move on to new challenges etc, but never criticise a current employer as that looks bad on you.
Put yourself in the interviewers position - does he really want to employ someone who is that quick to criticise people/companies?

In a recent interview I did the polite things about my former employer, the interviewer the started slagging off my employer. One of the funnier interviews I've done!
I've had the same thing happen! I was still careful to not stick the boot in too much though, tempting as it was...blindswelledrat said:
