CVs - Job history - how far do you go back?

I started working the mid 80s and o my CV it goes back the late 90s and then the last entry is 'Various marketing positions' and the company I worked for. Should I just focus on the last 10 years? The issue with this is it then only shows a couple of sectors I have worked in.
If that is your only worry then under "various marketing positions" just write something like progressed from Marketing Exec to Marketing Manager gaining experience in XYZ sectors. It's a good question that does not have a right answer; it depends!
Ideally, your CV should be brief but it should also meet the needs of the organisation to whom you are sending it.
If you can find this out, you will be one step ahead of the competition. This is something you could look at during your pre-application visit or discussion.
So it's less about what you did 20 years ago per se, but about you putting on there only the essential information to get through the sift to interview.
Good luck!
