I'm a employee and I employ 15 staff.
The rule in work time is mobile phone use is not allowed.
However trying to control this is a lost cause.
Just asking how other employers Handel this weather they accept it turn a blind eye etc.
How schools and colleges control this it must be a nightmare.

Put a local sim blocker on, not quite legal but you don't have to tell them or are you letting use your wifi ?

if its something like a warehouse, you can ban them in there, but you will need to provide secure lockers.

Your supervisor/team leaders will break your rule.

Telling them to leave them in their cars, while sounds like a solution is a non starter.

But you have to be flexible, say they have and ill family member, so may get a call at any time, same if if their partner is pregnant and due to pop.

In an office, the same secure lockers came be used

prepare to be unpopular.

Does their mobile phone useage affect their performance at work?

My boss is a funny one, he comes down hard on ridiculous things, mobile useage he doesn't care about; as long as it doesn't affect our work then he is fine.

My OH works for a large national, she is office based.

Mobile phones are not allowed on people's desk, unless it is a work mobile and anyone caught using it is given a warning. You're only allowed to use your mobile during breaks and pre-agreed exceptional circumstances.

It is difficult to enforce, but should curb most of it and will stop people using them in an obvious manner.

Where I used to work our mobiles where not allowed on our desks.

but there was a table behind our desks, and a paper tray was left empty for our phones.

Which meant if a call came in you could deal with it

We aren't allowed to carry our phones in areas accesible to customers. This means that the manager and team leader leave their phones in the office, the rest of us leave our phones in lockers, along with our money, keys, cigs, etc.
Problem is, they are metal lockers. Shut the door, no phone signal! We end up leaving the doors open.

Yup, the phones will burn through their charge as they have no signal, so use all the booster tech inside them, but to no aval.

If you have a procedure enforce it, but only if there are major concerns, if they are minor remind staff if no improvement then enforce. They have then made their choice.

You could look at it from a H&S point of view if you are in a warehouse.

Blimey!

Makes me realise how lucky I am - come and go when I want (breaks?), mobiles (who cares?), Spotify on the works laptop, make international calls on my desk phone etc etc.

To be honest you never hear mobiles and I've never noticed people using them excessively. Maybe you should just not bother, OP? Will they be that much of an issue?

Indeed. Try treating them as responsible adults and see what happens?

Have them listen to this (outside, if possible).

Or watch all your highly trained staff hand their notice in.

If you're using a personal mobile you're not concentrating on the job you're being paid to do. In a genuine emergency family can contact people through the switchboard, it's an excellent dross filter.

Personally I wouldn't entertain working somewhere that banned mobile phones, unless it was for confidentiality or health and safety reasons. Being allowed to use your phone, providing you don't take the piss, makes working somewhere a lot nicer. It's motivating to staff if they work in a nice environment, and by and large, everywhere I've worked has had a happy productive workforce who appreciate that they aren't controlled in this way so don't abuse it.

Machinery, not a chance. A risk assessment should eliminate use in a factory environment... Breaks and lunch are fine, but definitely not while on the floor.
