I have to go against the grain here and say I think you will struggle to get that money from the company.

I also think you are underselling yourself. If yoo dont mind not getting the job push for the money but never undersell yourself. It is a lot harder to get a pay rise once in a job than applying for one.

The employer is rightfully concerned because if you take it at this level you are effectively taking a cut v your current income level. They should have been told from the start that you'd want more than they advertised.

Did you at any point tell the recruitment company that you'd want more than £20k (the maximum they advertised the job for) ?

Firstly, how did the interview go?

Just be honest, "I'm really keen to work for you, love the sound of the role, bla bla bla, but I've crunched the numbers and I'd need £23k to make the role work for me financially." and see what they say. They'll want to know that you're serious about coming to work for them before they even consider asking internally for a bit more money.

Ignore the recruiter, they want you to sign the contract so they can get their money, they don't have to do the job, but it'll take you much longer to get to the £23k once inside.

The interview seemed to go quite well.

When the recruitment company rang they seemed very frustrated, although I never said that I wanted £20k they had just written it down that I would be happy on £20k. I tried to express my concern that I would struggle to run a car and commute the extra distance on this salary, but at the same time I probably could of been clearer. It is quite hard to negotiate with the recruitment agency as they are just trying to sell you to a company, for the money advertised.

I spent an hour or so writing an email last night (this is only a short email but I wanted it to read right.) In which I sent to the recruitment company, I wrote it with the intention that they could forward this straight onto the hiring manager. The recruitment company have now spoke to their client who will be in contact within a few days.

If I wasn't going through an agency I feel that this issue would of been easier to bring up, whereas if I bought it straight up with the agency this could of closed the opportunity straight away.

Generally they get paid if you take the job, I don't many that want you at the lowest price, it should make no difference. They will push you to take the job as that is how they would get paid or could have a contract.

Sorry that comment was completely inaccurate. I meant to say that they are just looking to place you in the position.

Congratulations! It sounded as though the employer didnt want money to be a showstopper and the agent just wanted an easy quick deal. Glad you hung out for what you need, and from the sound of it there's an amount of goodwill added as well.

Thank you, now the next worry.

They need to do a DBS/CRB check, as they are a financial company. I stupidly had too much to drink 18 months ago and ending up spending the night in the cells with an £80 fine, for being drunk and disorderly. Will this affect anything?
