Hi Folks,

I had an interesting interview yesterday. It was suppose to be with the HR manager and the finance director. I had a 45min interview with the HR manager. She was positive during the interview. Afterwards she popped out to call the FD and came back in to say the FD is busy and will call me for her interview.

I drove back 25 miles thinking what a waste of time. I have not heard anything back today.

Do I drop them an email to chase up or put this all down to experience and move on?

Regards,
LP.

Leave it. If they want to get back to you they will do in their own time.

Sounds to me like the FD would be a nightmare to deal with. Cannot structure their day to have a chat with potential new talent? Really???

Could be a lucky escape.

Email them, thank them for their time and say you look forward to hearing from them.

Keep it professional and move on... You never know, in a few weeks they might get back to you and give you the job..

It has happened to me a few times over the years. I've always viewed it as a lucky escape!

I think I walked pass the FD on my way out. She was in her late 50's and looked like a real moody so and so. Didn't even smile.

It is a well paying role however I think the drawbacks are its 20-25 miles each way and there is no way I can afford to own a decent car doing those miles! I was having doubts but this odd event highlighted to me it is not for me. Reading the above comments I realise it is actually rude what she did.

Thanks gents.

a 50 mile round trip commute? oh boo you.
I know someone who has a F10 M5 doing 125 miles a day.

But I agree, if they cannot be bothered to arrange a meeting appropriate for you, says it all really.
A mate of mine came for an interview where I work (we used to work together).
He arranged an 11am interview? Interviewers turned up an hour and a half late.
Needless to say he did get the job but left less than 3 months later.

The miles per day isn't much. Happy to do those miles. My concern is I like low mileage cars and I dont fancy piling on the miles like that on a decent car, firstly depreciation will be tough and also maintenance will be high. I could not afford either on the salary they are offering.

Yep, I think you are right. If they can't sort out a simple meeting I guess it will be ste when I am in there.

To add my 2p worth.

Every job where I have had management take out the time to interview me has been worthwhile. A majority of the jobs where the interviewer rescheduled multiple times or couldn't fit me in for a 15 minute chat for 3 weeks were ones I ended up leaving after a short while as the companies were that st.

Just my limited experience above.

Job interviews are 2 way, sometimes you can get a good feel for a company by the way they treat you, I've had a few contacts with companies of late about jobs and you can get a good idea of a company from how disorganised and disinterested some people can be.

I actually had a company recently that I was dropping my portfolio off with and the dept manager took the time to speak to me and look through my portfolio with me. Alas I wasn't the fit for the role but they where very good about it. In contrast the worst was being interviewed by a member of HR who asked me a to draw a bicycle on a white board, I terminated the interview and left. I now carry a permanent marker into interviews with me to make a lasting impression.

And me.
Think about this clearly. Unless a member of family is ill, no business situation warrants not meeting someone that you've asked to attend at a particular time and date.
I wouldn't want to work in a company like that.

so what your saying is there chat with you is more important than something that could be mission critical ?
things can pop up at any time that need immediate attention if it's a choice of dealing with an issue that is going to have a major impact or speaking with a potential candidate I know which way I'd be going and if the candidate didn't want to come back in then well there's more fish in the sea.

I would be more worried about joining a company in which that person would choose the 15 min chat over the building burning down.

To which it takes 2 minutes for FD/MD/HR to say, look, sorry we are in a critical state, the building is on fire.
Half of the time, and I know because I've seen it first hand from both sides, that a previous meeting at another location has overrun or there's a conference call with an investor/business partner which was double booked.

Plenty more fish in the sea may not be that right candidate you couldn't be bothered to at least let him know that you are sorry about missing their meeting, for which they probably have taken a day off work and travelled possibly hours to come to.

I had an interview in Exeter recently. I live in Berkshire.
That was a 5 hour, 200 mile round trip. Had I gotten there and the people were not available I would have not been happy whatsoever.

they did say though, they were busy.
just because you go in for an interview doesn't mean your entitled to specific information as to why they are unable to attend.

must of been driving slow as it doesn't take 5 hours to get to Exeter

The HR girl did say the FD is extremely busy. She doesn't have time for anything...

I have not emailed them to withdraw my interest though I do feel like doing so. I don't think I want to work for such a unprofessional company.

You've really grasped the English language haven't you ?
He didn't say it took 5 hours.

The OP was invited to meet the HR manger and the FD.
The FD said she was too busy and would do the interview over the phone. Most people would think that was very poor. At the least they could have said to the OP that they were sorry, something urgent came up, etc.
But to simply say that she is too busy and assuming that the OP will be happy to interview over the phone later is showing a total lack of respect IMO.

I don't want to put too much self-worth on myself. They are IMHO quite unprofessional.

I am debating whether I get an email in there to say sorry not interested.
