My 20 year old backpack has finally broken a strap so I need a new bag.

Tempted by a messenger type bag and there is a lot of choice from £20 off Amazon through to silly money.

Does anyone have any suggestions on something that is decent quality so should last, and that is vaguely worth the money?

I recently bought 1 from North Face. It cost me 45 euro in a sale. They were around 65 euro on their website. Their own store was a lot more.

It's got an extra strap to use when bike riding, the zip on the outside of the flap is waterproof and because it's got both velco and clips holding the flap down it's very hard to open without me noticing when the underground is wedged. Also has a bit with padding at the bottom to take a tablet

Had my Crumpler bag for 4+ years now and apart from looking a little dirty in places it's still as good as new. Fantastic quality. Also have a Crumpler wallet than has endured just as well.

I like bags. I have about 6 messenger bags. Calvin Klein (oddly not actually one of the ones I have) do a good mid-range one.

Crumpler look OK, leaning towards something canvas/waxed cotton than leather if that helps with any suggestions.

Troop do a nice range of good quality, affordable bags, in varying styles, I had one a few years ago; only getting rid as it was too small, unfortunately I didn't replace it with another Troop one, but some crap from Topman.

Topman bag has gone and has been replaced by a fantastic Fred Perry, messenger bag; give Free Perry a look too, however Troop seems more hard wearing and robust.

Filson do some nice bags that fit that bill. Think canvas/leather meets computer type bag. Will last forever and age gracefully, but not cheap.

I use their briefcase PC style bag with a shoulder strap. Handy on my scooter and smart enough for any meeting.

I was going to suggest Troop as well.

I've had a couple of bags from them and they are excellent. I have smaller Troop messenger bag that I use for holidays, good for my camera, wallet, map etc.

This. It's canvas, the right size and masculine.

There's a line where it's a handbag and IMO that's just crossed it smile

Barbour
A bit expensive, but fits the second criteria "worth the money".
Based upon my experience of their outdoor activity related bags, it is unlikely to require replacement before your retirement.

About as masculine as a Thai hooker with a fist full of Flunitrazepam.

Get a proper bag, FFS and don't bother with cheap, plastic high street st.

Freitag. I've had mine for over a decade, it's travelled all over the world with me and it barely looks worn. Probably a bit hipster though...

I don't want to break any forum rules, and as a new member I don't want to test the waters - but I design men's bags so I would suggest if you want something that is really going to last, try searching for Cora + Spink. There is a 24oz canvas range arriving next week which is looking rather good drink

That looks like a granny's handbag, it's definitely not masculine.

It is hideous, no wonder it is in the sale.

The problem with buying from Topman, River Island etc, is the bags will be trendy and fashionable at this moment in time; fine if you want to be trendy or fashionable, however if you just want a run of the mill bag that will last and you want it to go with everything and to be functional then the fashion chains aren't the places to buy, plus they are usually over priced and of poor quality.
