I have worked 9 to 5:30 but 8 till 5 seems a lot. Is it normal? never heard of 45 hrs per week.

I would consider anything from a 35 to 40 hour week 'normal' in terms of what you are contracted to work.

Of course the hours you actually need to put in to do the job effectively is a completely different matter.

Assuming 1 hour lunch that's a 40 hour week so fairly normal. My first job had those hours (well 8.30-5.30) and it was common for the industry (O&G Shipping & Logistics).

It's an unusual amount to be contracted, are you sure you only get 30 mins lunch?

I work 8:30 to 5:30, so it would be normal for me. 9-5 seems odd (though nice if you can get it!)

8 hour days (plus an hour for lunch) are fairly standard. I do 9-5:30, although generally in by 8:30.

Not sure what normal is these days. During my time in London as a high flying chef 70 hours a week was normal.

These days as a carpenter in Norway 8-3 is a normal working day.......finish at 2 on a Friday biggrin

My colleagues who don't work from home and are only paid a salary work 09:00 to 17:30 which is what I'd typically see as normal working hours.

My first job was 0900-1700 and a lot of the older guys were on 0900-1630 contracts!

Later jobs have been 0900-1730. I was offered a few roles in London a few months ago which were all 0900-1800, it seems to have become the new norm (or perhaps always was and I have been lucky for the last few decades).

Civil Service (so largest employer in the UK) is a 37 hour standard working week (i.e. 7 hours 24 minutes per day) and 36 in London.

Of course, that's contracted hours. I do not remember the last time I worked anywhere where a lunch hour was an hour.

9-6 is almost standard in many jobs in London now, so I wouldn't say its unusual.

Have done 7 - 5.30 for the last 3 years. Enjoy missing most of the traffic on a morning.

35 hour working week for me. My boss doesn't care what hours I work as long as I get the work done and it adds up to 35 hours per week.

Best job I've ever had.

My first job in Finance was 9am - 5pm, then my current job was 9am - 5.30pm, that extra half hour was a pain especially with the 30-45 min commute either end, which was a 5 minute walk in the first job. Then the job went down to 9am - 5pm as we moved to shared Offices and they closed at 5pm, then I moved to working from home, so whilst technically still 9am-5pm, it's anything really :-)

Ironic isn't it - you can pretty much guarantee everyone in the London office will have had an hour or more commute, and the hours are longer than in the rest of the country.

But people still do it ...

Unless you've opted out the 48-hour Working Time Directive then probably :-)
