It works for the staff, it works for the management and it works for the company. We're paid well enough to put in the extra hours when the demand requires it.
Well good for you. But it sounds like you all regularly do more. I also do sometimes and do what's needed (was a recent point of discussion on radio 2 as well). I am just questioning if it's right. Germany and Norway seem to do ok in big oil operators with people on big salaries and extra hours is far from normal. We're not on flexi hours contractually, but because our teams and management structure is all over the place, we're generally allowed to be flexible.
It does work well, as I say I prefer to get in an hour early and bump off an hour early. This means I commute outside of the main traffic rush, and get more use of the light evenings to take the dog out.
Quite a few young parents in our department too so it works well for them and their schedules.
One of the annoying things is when a manager does occasionally get funny about the hours.. They'll rock up at 8:45 when me and a few others have been in since 7am, then when we all pack up and leave at 3:40ish we get funny looks like we're sciving off to the pub
There's good and bad when it comes to loose, ambiguous management I guess

If you're regularly doing all those extra hours and you're all a good productive team then your management needs to employ another person so you can work the hours you are contracted to. Instead you all work extra to try and get the next job.
Or perhaps just update the contracts to reflect reality.p1stonhead said:
Bloody hell I've been doing 6.30am - 5.30pm for the last 2 years. Hopefully it'll pay off soon!
I get loads done in the two odd hours before anyone else gets in.
I used to do rotating 6-2 then 2-10 shifts. The 6-2 shift meant 0515 start and 1600 finish and not productive. 2-10 shift mean 1330start 2230 finish and the post 1800time was my most efficient time. Got loads done......I get loads done in the two odd hours before anyone else gets in.

I wonder if the people merrily posting how long they work (11 hours a day, 5 days a week or whatever) are actually contracted to do those hours?
or just worl in a culture of presenteeism or a culture where not getting tasks done regardless of how unachievable they are in a set time frame is seen as failure ... mph1977 said:

Quite a few at my work are contracted for that. 7-6 Monday to Friday. Some work Saturday 6-2 as well. That's with a 40 minute break. I'm paid on an hourly basis here in France. 24h teaching/week, but with lessons at the start/end of each day. That means arriving at 8 every morning and leaving at 6.30 pm. Students in French sixth forms have on average 35h of lessons a week.
My daily commute is 2h30 so that means alarm set for 6am, and back home for 8pm!!
Oh, i forgot. I also do 14 Saturdays/year for open days/mock exams/special events (most unpaid), plus pedagogical meetings/termly student progress meetings also afterschool. (back home at 9-10 pm those evenings).
French students don't go to school on Wednesdays so i teach elsewhere ( so i can pay the bills!).
Off course everynight i work (lesson planning/marking)

I'm already compensated well so I see it as it comes with the territory in a professional well paid role. My wife works longer hours as a primary school teacher for about a third of the money.
The way I see it I'm setting myself up well for the future. And if they screw me I'll just smash the place up

I can't understand why more firms don't operate flexi hours. Unless you are in a customer facing role it doesn't make a lot of difference to the work, yet employees are happier and more productive working to the hours that suit them (within reason), getting in early, beating traffic etc. I love it. I suspect it would blur the lines with unpaid overtime for some though!
