I work 08:00-18:00 with an hours lunch break which in reality is more like 40 minutes. I earn an okay salary and it's a decent place to work, we are looked after. I have to work one in every 4 Saturday mornings for 5 hours and I never work bank holidays or Sunday's. Latest I usually stay is an extra 15 minutes. I will never earn a fortune, might get to £30kish in a few years. But we live in the Dorset countryside, can afford one nice holiday a year abroad and smaller breaks away too. I'm pretty happy with all that. 8-6 can be a long old day as it is, I'm up at 6am every morning and in bed by 10 most evenings.

You're being mugged off then.

MIGHT get to £30k? What, the average salary for the whole country while working 10 hours a day? Sod that.

Typical PH response rolleyes

Isn't the average £26k? I don't feel mugged off, my pay is in line with what I do (motor trade) I don't know too many people earning over £30k. All I can say is we live comfortably so my wage seems fine.

Tend to agree. Regions vary, skills vary, opportunities vary.

To be fair you may be, but you also may be doing quite nicely vs. other folks in the same role in the same area.

It is pretty typical PH. Condescending and who is he to say you're being mugged off regardless of the national salary. Ignore him.

If your happy with your job balls to everyone else.

You didn't mention what your mortgage is ,so could have a tiny mortgage so need less money.

I'm not paid the world but only have 4 years left on the mortgage and a mile and a half commute to work that id hate to give up.

Sounds fine to me. An enjoyable job, with pleasant people, in a rural part of the UK may well be far more fulfilling than many jobs paying twice the amount.

I think its over £27k for full time workers.

Fair enough, I know how little time working ten hours leaves, and it wouldn't stack for me.

We rent, currently saving for a mortgage. Hope to have enough in two years.

Do you regret going into the motor trade at all?

Genuine question. I'm also in the motor trade and consider your hours and pay to be very normal for the trade, but reading this thread and seeing the hours that people do seriously makes me question the motor trade, and the expected hours and pay.

It is the exact reason I left the motor trade (granted only did 18 months or so 7-8 years ago).

Work all the hours that exist (inc the ones nobody else works, and get off the ones that EVERYONE else works) for st money. I literally saw no upside to it, I was into cars, but that made little odds, and I expect the few jobs there are working with and around supercars each day are so hard to come by that you could spend 5 years trying to land one!

The final thing that made me think - no thanks - was when someone I knew through work told me her partner that flogged cars for Porsche had a VW Golf as his company car.

Many many people work unsocial hours though , it's not as if the motor trade is some special case.

Talk to police, fire, ambulance services, taxi drivers, posties, bakers, hgv drivers, warehouse staff, care assistants, they've all worked/work stty hours.

Yes, I wouldn't want to do any of those jobs either.

The point being, there are lots of other jobs out there with similar actual functions in other industries which pay similar/better without the silly working hours smile

I normally do 7.10 till 16:00 with anything from 30 to 120 minutes for lunch. Anything over 37.5 hours a week can be used as flexitime.

There is definitely an element of macho 'pissing contest' viewpoint to some people too. I'm working 70-80 hours a week and if you can't or don't want to do that then you are a massive floss type thing.

Not everyone by any means, but it's definitely there.

My wife is a partner in a reasonably large accountancy firm and earns very good money but works very long hours (probably 50-60 each week as a minimum and often more.). There is no doubt the hours and stress are taking a toll on her and on others in the firm too. I think a big problem is that with mobile phones, email, etc you are almost never away from the office.

I'm contracted for 37.5 hours per week and probably do 40-ish per week. There are some people in my office who do 50-60 but I don't think they really need to and I think the more you do those sorts of hours the more it becomes expected of you to do it, and if you dropped back by 10 hours or so it would be commented on.

I earn a reasonable wage but am definitely of the 'work to live' persuasion so will never earn a fortune but I'm happy with that.

100% agree with the accountancy firm experience. Similar to law in that respect. I'm in finance and most of the year 35-40 hours a week is the norm. Year end can be manic with 65 hours per week being quite common but fortunately the MD will let you have a few days off once the accounts are done and dusted.

No I enjoy it, I finish at 6 and have every weekend but one Saturday morning per month off too.
