Have you considered an engineering apprenticeship? My employer is currently recruiting for people in the power distribution industry and doesn’t require any previous experience or knowledge.

We’ve several older ex-apprentices who joined later in their careers and a few years down the road are doing very well indeed. T
I applied to the UKPNs latest apprenticeship recruitment programme (ended 15th May) and I was rejected due to my age (40).

I've got a BTEC level 5 qualification (motor vehicle engineering) and level 6 (IT) and have an engineering background, but their 'talent acquisition team' rejected me due to my age.

seeing a few friends (with degrees and trades) struggling to get a job showed me how tough the market can be at the moment.
Very wise words.

An update to this. I have now compiled a CV. It is the first I have ever written and I am actually quite pleased with it. It is 2 sides of A4 simply detailing my education, my employment, my core skills and current responsibilities and a brief paragraph on me and why I am looking for a change in career path. I have tried to steer it away from being just waffle and hope it will be refreshing to any prospective employer.

I have also been looking online and registering with job sites. Most of the jobs make for grim reading, anything remotely decent seems to have heavy requirements to have experience of / qualifications in specific fields, none of which I have. But I have sent my CV to a couple of them and will persevere.

I have also signed up to job alerts with a railway but as yet nothing has come about.

Anyone know of any decent sites for ex cops?

Good work. Have someone you trust check it over and be brutal with you about any changes that are needed.

Jobsgopublic is supposed to be good for public sector stuff which is a safe start. A lot of jobs pay well and you can search for something a bit permanent from there, it's what I did when I left university, a very dull 6 months but money in the bank for old rope.

Hi there, I have a successful career in Marketing which is all about presenting myself and information in the most optimised way. If you'd like me to look at or suggest any changes to your cv I'd be happy to do so, have done this successfully for friends.

Without wishing to derail the thread, have you thought about applying for the smart metering job? (If they're still available that is!) I work for UKPN and we've had a few older guys come on doing just that.

Interesting thread. 11 years service on my part, shafted by HMGov last time round and been thinking of a change ever since. Put myself into a few specialist roles over the last 5 years and have been fortunate that I've been in one of the better positions of late. All good things come to an end though and with more cuts looming, looks like our dept will close.

Had an interest in getting onto the railways and passed application and assessment with one which ultimately turned out to be too far away, and didn't pass application for the one on the doorstep this time round. I'm looking to apply again if it comes up but they're pretty rare roles and always heavily over subscribed.

If I do step out then I'll be looking for something completely different. Always been interested in property but to attain a similar salary i would probably have to look at chartered surveyor rather than estate agent!

OP I feel your pain in being tied into to financial circs with family etc as having young children myself it concerns me that the leap of faith into the unknown could work out badly. Sometimes you need a bit of luck as well as hard work. Best of luck with it.

I am an ex officer, left almost 2 years ago now after 7 and a half years in the job.

I know where you're coming from, I hated the last couple of years. I don't know where you're located or what force you are in but I was unfortunate enough to have to deal with Police Scotland and all the changes that brought about.

Anyway, I now work in health and safety. Yeah I retrained myself and got a NEBOSH qualification but the skills from the Police to this are surprisingly similar.

If you want a few tips about what I put into my CV in relation to skills etc, feel free to give me a PM. always happy to let another officer get out.

Look into recruitment agencies that specialise with placing those who have worked in the police force, mostly in anti-fraud and security jobs.

If you're in the south-east, there's plenty of financial companies that would be keen to have ex-police in their fraud/financial crime/ money laundering teams.

Red Snapper Group are a recruitment agency that pop up on my linkedin fairly often and always seems to be recruiting for ex-police, send your CV over to them.

Good luck!

My journey has led me to the offer of a job interview as a "Self Employed Enforcement Agent" aka bailiff with a company called Marston.

Phone calls initially were slightly vague however I am told that I am given a selection of warrants to wade through, and am paid £80 on completion of each one. I am also told that experienced bailiffs are getting through around 15 to 20 a week and you can earn around 1k a week enforcing them. This is based on 5 to 6 days a week and working hours from 6am to 9am, whatever you choose in your self employed role. It all sounds appealing, but I suspect it is not quite as rosy as I have been led to believe.

Does anybody have experience of the role or know someone that carries it out? The interview / selection process appears pretty easy from what I gather, so they can't be too fussy who they choose.

No direct experience myself, but I watched a video on YouTube today where a bailiff was absolutely torn apart by the poster when his actions were illegal, and the poster was backed up by the police officer in attendance. I think you'd be a real asset to your employer if you could make a seizure legally while being assertive and professional, unlike the guy in the video.

Good luck.

As above really, no experience, but I know of two colleagues who left and went into that field. It's seems our skills are highly valued and understandably so. Used to dealing with conflict etc.

That said its never appealed to me, grief day In day out.

But best of luck

I'm a paramedic and looking for a way out of the job. Struggling as it is such a niche role so I know how you feel. I love my job but I'm tired of been treated like a piece of st by management and dealing with non emergencies constantly.

I'm just sick of all things policing. It's rubbish, pointless thankless work and having given so much of my life to it already I, like all I work with, just want out.

So far looking at other jobs I am coming to realise firstly what easy money policing is and also how difficult it seems to get any sort of meaningful job in the outside world without niche experience. I've had a few phonecards and leads buy they are for vague roles either in sales or self employed enforcement where longevity and security are an unknown.

I'll persevere though. It's a shame my driving skills don't count for much. I was offered an instructors place in the police in 2014 which I had to turn down for geographical reasons but nothing in the private sector seems to require the raft of driving skills I have.

That's the crux of it. Outside of the major cities, it's a tough task to be looking for £40k a year, with good pension and hol entitlements. I went from being sick of my job to absolutely loving it and enjoying coming to work with a change of dept. Maybe that might work for you

Would your driving skills not be sought after in the private security industry?

In my third decade of 24/7 response Policing. It certainly isn't 'easy money'. The shift patterns alone (before taking into account all the cancelled rest days and unpaid overtime) means you earn every penny.
