Changing jobs for a pay cut?

Thank you for the kind words. I have just sold my Porsche 944 so have a small buffer. Two months maximum money to keep me, the family and the mortgage going.I will keep you all updated, i have annual leave booked for Wednesday, Thursday and Friday this week (and had to fight for it) the next two days will be critical as I am being blammed for not leaving the projects in a good state.
Watch this space.
I took a £10K pay cut from £27K to £17K to leave a job that, in the long term, would have made me very unwell due to the stress and pressure.
When I started, and loved, my new job I said to one of my friends 'this is the first time in two years I have not had a knot in my stomach'.
And, in the long term, the new job led to where I am now (which is in a job I enjoy very much on a considerably larger salary than the hellish nightmare I was enduring for £27K).
So, in summary, get out. You can't buy good health.

Look at it this way Roy:
1) Public Sector Pension scheme, even after the changes, puts in the same as a 20% employer contribution would be. The most generous private sector scheme I have ever seen was a 10% contribution. So the 56K you are on is only like 50K in the public sector.
2) Flexitime in the public sector lets you count every minute extra you put in. With no real effort (slightly shorter actual lunch breaks - do you even leave your desk currently?) you can have an extra day off per month, ~ 12 days per year. That works out at around £1800 pre-tax. So the 50K from above comes down to 48K.
Hence, are you really taking a pay cut at all?
Get out before you crack up.

Thanks Flooble. I appreciate your reply. What you say makes sense. Regards the pension, I agree, this was something sacred to long term civil servants. Lunch? I gave not had a lunch break since starting here in December. It's a sandwich at the desk while fire fighting or covering up something after finding problems. 1) Public Sector Pension scheme, even after the changes, puts in the same as a 20% employer contribution would be. If it was for a contract role, don't be upset if you hear nothing more.
The firm hiring have no more need to tell you why you didn't get it than they are to tell Staples why they haven't made another order for photocopier paper.
If you went through an agent, even less chance you will hear anything - their only purpose is to get a candidate in place.
Just move on to the next one.

Sounds like a terrible situation so good luck, I took a (much smaller) pay cut to get out of London as the city was driving my into depression along with my job changing for the worse.
I am now a mere £2K away from my old salary and have actually found a job I'd be happy doing for the rest of my career which I haven't had before.
I know it's hard but try not to let the morale fall when hunting for jobs. Get your partner to help you look? Mine did and sat next to me going "why are you not applying for that one? You've got most of what they are asking for".

Update for those interested.
Interview later today - with Govt organisiation in Swindon. It will give me a £11k pay cut over what I earn at my current place of work and is only a 6 mth fixed term contract. The agent has assured me that this ftc is all the rage and it will be extended or made perm if i perform and fit in well.
Its a huge risk.

Is it really? 6 months in a job that will allow you to rebuild your confidence (during which you can look for other jobs if you like) vs how long before the current job kills you or they kick you out?Interview later today - with Govt organisiation in Swindon. On the facts you have given a no brainer imho.......
EDIT: btw I stuck with a job I hated for too long just because it paid well and it literally nearly killed me (had stress related heart problems that cause a stroke). I then went from £60-100k a year to zero for two years and am now back to about £20k. Wish I had made the move to what I am doing now (ie a £40k plus drop) years ago........
