Why oh why do magazines always send out "media packs" with pie in the sky fantasy rates. Then after hassling you for 12 months offer you 85% off?

hahaa why dont they just have a sensible price list to begin with?

Do the big boys / multinationals just pay the card rates without question or something?

The industry works on discounts. If a buyer can say he got space at 50% below rate card, it looks better than if he paid 100% of half the price.

Having a published rate card is required to get on to BRAD (British Rates and Data) which advertising agencies use to select which publications in which to place their client's ads. A lot of ad agencies (not all) earn their fees from the commission paid to them by the publication or media owner so they tend to pay the full rate card price to get the biggest commission.

I think it used to also be required to get ABC accreditation to certify circulation but not sure if this still applies.

For the smaller publications, Simpo is right. Rather like when Evere...sorry...Angl...sorry....... a double glazing company shows you the price and then the price if you order right there and then.
