I understand the best direction to drive the Big Sur is southbound, but where is the best point to bale out after seeing most of the best bits?

Where is the best place to look at the giant Sequoias?

Ditto Giant Redwoods?

You need to see the tree "General Sherman" in sequoia national park

Big Sur is far enough, in my view.

Heading south from there is an example of the law of diminishing returns (at least as far as LA).

If you like sequioas, go to Muir Woods, just across the bridge from San Francisco.

Good advice, far less travel!

If travel isn't an issue I would recommend looking at the "avenue of Giants" - better than big sur IMO but fair way north from San Fran though

There is also a redwood you can drive through, seemed like a good idea u till I got close and realised how tight a fit the massive jeep we had was, no dramas though, thankfully! :-)

Also if you carry on to Seattle there are some amazing forests, one in particular was very memorable but I'm not 100% sure which one it was now!

It's a nice drive from Seattle to San Fran, especially if you spend a few days around Olympic NP - depending on what the plan is may be an option (Seattle its self I wasn't a fan of though)

If you're doing Big Sur, carry on to San Simeon and visit Hearst Castle. An incredible place.

Then go inland and do Sequoia and King's Canyon Parks. When we did it we stayed in Visalia, a handy place to visit both.

We went to Big Basin Redwoods state park, its located in Santa Cruz County, about 36 km northwest of Santa Cruz. Its only a small forest but there are some very big redwoods.

Around the Sequoia and kings canyon national parks is the gold country, where the Californian gold rush started, it is good for a few stops and great views along the river.
The trip down from SF should be done south from the big sur (the best views of the ocean) San Simenon and hurst castle, then go inland and drive up Kings canyon, sequoia, gold country and Yosemite.

Just come back - I'm knackered !

The Big Sur is a great bit of road, either way works well as there are plenty of places to pull off for photos
