Hey, good evening!

Is it my perception or have the prices of second hand cars increased significantly over the past couple of years?

It seems that you cannot get anywhere near the same sort of car for the same money as you could two or three years ago. Say friend spent 8k on a relatively normal mundane car, <30k miles on it etc. yet spending the same now only gets you one two years younger with 70k on it?

Is this a sign of the times getting better and it being supply vs demand?

Sports models have certainly increased in the last 3 years - many of the older ones have doubled.

Mundane / undesirable models in the lower price range have never been cheaper.

Nope just that in 08-61 reg the volume of cars sold was very low so very little supply yet same used car buyer demand.

The downward trend of new registrations started in 2002. Only from 2012 did it really pick up.

Yes but there was a MASSIVE contraction following the financial crash no one was buying anything

It's not really a matter of discussion it's plain facts.

In the same way that the older sporty stuff has massively increased in % terms.

Supras, Skylines, RX7, older 911, 968, 944T, E36 328, GT3, GT2 etc have almost doubled in 3 yrs
But they are niche minuscule volume cars and if you totalled them up represent nothing of the car market. They do represent the sports car section / older sports car section.

I am talking about new cars in the era I stated vastly lower sales which now are feeding down to low ish value used second hand cars and they are more due to fewer of them - possibly too because we have more migrants driving demand for older used cars? Another good reason we voted out

OP i think things like the e65/e66 seven series seem to cost what they did in 2010 ..roughly.
A lot of the higher end stuff has gone up or been level for years now.

But, since the price of scrap is on it arse (droped from £200 a ton to £30 a ton) Mot'd £200 bangers seem to be plentiful, I was snotter hunting in late 2014 and everything was £400.

Even quite a few £100-150 runners on gumtree or AT some even with 10 months mot.
Thinks this is also due to the legacy of the hateful scrappage scheme slowly diminishing.

Regards.
