Hi, I'm after some advice and hoping the PH masses can help.

I'm currently serving in the Army and I will be in the fortunate position of having 4 weeks off in December. I'm expecting my first child on the way March 17 and I'm looking to earn a few extra pennies.

Has anyone got any suggestions on what I could do to earn some money by working for a short period? I was thinking of courier driving as I believe this will be in high demand running up to Christmas however do not have much knowledge on this subject ie. Will i require my own van etc...

Finally I currently earn 30k per annum, how would I go about paying tax and would it affect my salary in the future?

Thanks for your time,
Jamie

This had crossed my mind but wasn't sure if they take in temporary staff without prior security checks?

Could you not apply now in advance?

Quite a few shops look for temporary staff at that time.

Better get the applications in now, most of the Christmas adverts have started. Any work you do will be classed as a 2nd job, so will be taxed as such. Get some shelf stacking or delivery jobs, keeps you busy

Are you up for grunt work/lugging?

Lots of crew work in events & exhibitions.

Agencies like Pinnacle and Gallowglass always need bodies.

All the retailer warehouses will have been gearing up for Christmas since June so they are always taking more and more people on - usually min wage but mindless work that can sometimes be a laugh depending on who else works there

Many of the one-offs are self employed and temporary (other than shop work and Xmas helping out) so you'd need to complete a self assessment.

I really dont know about forces paperwork but it'd be worth checking there's no limitations on what you can do in your own time, and whether there's an issue with doing anything on paid leave and whether leave might get cancelled at short notice.

Best thing I can come up with to be honest, outside of seasonal shop work and delivering catalogues is buy a few cars and punt them on privately through Facebook groups after fixing up some of the problems

This is the best suggestion, or how about being Santa.
