Retired NHS Midwife wants to get back to work - part time.

I thought I'd ask this here, maybe someone can help.

Mrs Q is a retired midwife, she was asked to do some part time research work, which see enjoys, but after a year she has been told to repay half her annual pension as she has earns 'more than is allowed'.

I'm sure the NHS know what they're doing, but we only have their word for it. Has anyone come across this before? They are crying out for research nurses at the hospital where Mrs Q works, as things stand its not worth her while carrying on but I would be interested to know what others do and if there's a way around it?

while recieving an NHS pension you can only earn from the NHS (salary + pension) the same as you recieved prior to leaving ... designed to stop people 'retiring' for a week and 560 and then coming back into the same job on the same hours for another 5 -10 years while recieving their pension as well ...

generally for people will full service this means 0.5 FTE at the same grade or being reemployed ona lesser grade ( for instance i know someone who retited from what would not be a band 8b role at either 55 or 60 ( not sure if she had special class) and she works 30 hours as a band 5 now as not to fall foul of the total NHS derived income thing )

What about the retire and return scheme? I guess you can't apply retrospectively?

usually lower grades or fewer hours ... as discussed above , of deferement of pension in full or part ( as there is little to be gained on the older NHS FS pensions from working for more than 40 years)

Thanks very much for the replies, this place is so helpful. Yes, she was being paid on grade 8, so that would account for it.
