Apparently some are paying 10% of net salary on train fares:-

Rail season tickets cost 10% of net pay

0.

It's a 10 minute walk into work for me. Living in Brighton if I was to do the London commute I'd need to earn the best part of 10k a year just to earn the cost of a season ticket.

This is before considering the 15 hours of hell it would entail. fk that.

45-50 minutes each way, unless I work late and can get up to speed on the motorway in which case it's down to 35 minutes.

Costs around about £8 a day now, was pretty painful when fuel was up to £1.40 a gallon.

Wow you must love your job to be paying that much to get to it!

Me I could work from home full time but pop into the office a couple of times a week to stop myself going mad which probably costs £10-20 fuel.

Mine is about 5% of net pay.

I hate travelling with people, so having to pay anything to commute by train would be too much. I wouldn't work in London for any salary. I live in Northampton, so assuming work is a 10 minute onward walk/tube from Euston, that would still be 1.5 hours door to door. fk that (plus the season ticket is about 3x the amount cited in the article).

I swore to never work in London.
But I got offered a job for money I couldn't say no to.

I bought a Motorcycle, cost me £1700 - Can sell for £2200 all day long.

Servicing myself at £60 per time average every 5-6k
Insurance was £300 for the year
Fuel from Newbury and back is approx 15-16 quid a day and I go in maybe once or twice a week at best.

Mine would be very reasonable, if it wasn't for the fking Severn Bridge toll. £6.60 a day, a long with fuel.

fking hate paying it, don't get used to it!

If I take the ZOE from work then £nil, as I charge it at work.

If I take a petrol or diesel car from work then about £2.50 a day in fuel.

I do, although there are plenty of other people getting the train up to town each day with me so, whilst I know it's not normal in UK terms, I don't think of it as particularly abnormal in the commuter belt.

Many will be paying more than 10% of net ... Reading to London zones 1-6 = £5024 a year in standard class. Still, at least you get to stand for the entire journey for that modest sum smile

London exerts a magnetic hold on people. I know guys who could earn the same or more money out in the Shires, but they insist they have to be in London.

This in turn means other people who would be happy to live outside, also end up having to be in London.
