Long time reader, first time poster. I've recently opted to leave the military and go back to civilian life after marriage and job dissatisfaction etc.

6.5 years in
Corporal
Weapons tech
Mechanical engineering with some electrical.

I'm looking to get into the railways, rolling stock inspection / repair.

Is anyone in the trade that can offer advise, I've created a cv from viewing friends etc, attended a few job fairs and distributored said cv. However now I've decided which route I'd like to take need to tailor my cv to suit.

Also what course would benefit through previous experience

Can anyone help ?

Thanks in advance

Happy to feed back on your cv with your trajectory in mind; just pass it across.

You thought of automotive industry gaz? We've got a few ex army guys in the engineering departments, I think JLR where doing some programme to employ army leavers in varying roles too.

JLR have a huge interest in hiring ex military staff so if you are interested then definitely apply! I work with quite a few ex military guys and JLR value their skill set which is hard to find

Also consider getting into M&E maintenance. Every large building is stuffed full of electrical and mechanical systems that need maintenance.

I did about 8 years with an M&E company after leaving the RN as a weapons engineer. As I was an NCO i started as a supervisor, and got promoted to manager.

Have you chose your resettlement courses? After 6 years you have full entitlement I believe. When I left, the company I did my resettlement with had a kind of career adviser who helped with CV's and to be fair even got me the job I still do today.(They where heavily involved with ex service leavers) He also gave me various websites and advice on how to approach potential companies, I had no gripes with how my resettlement worked out.

I also still got job adverts from them in my sector today. I left 6 years ago.

Yes I get full resettlement for times served, corse wise I'm not entirely sure.
For cheap course I'm looking to do 17th edition purely for myself and house renovation.
L3 health and safety workplace and prince2 I think.

There's the potential for me to up my nvq3 to a hnc however I'd have to fund and claim it back over a few years.

Thanks for advise so far

Reference JLR it would be good however I'm a settled homeowner near Portsmouth, Hampshire.
One of my reasons for leaving the army was sick of moving around, he says being posted in 4 weeks time, joy !
