Work issued me an iPhone 5S. Not allowed to really use the data on it for any purpose (including work), we are expected to use our own phones data allowance if needed, no personal calls.
I'm curious, if you can't use data on it why do they give you a smartphone?

At my previous company we had Samsung Galaxy minis, they were st. My boss regularly moaned at me for high data use, I only used it for work as I have my own phone. It wouldn't connect to the work wifi so emails all got sent via the mobile network. Hey ho!

Unfortunately I cant do the poll thing because I honestly couldn't tell you jack about my work phone (my only phone).
Its a SONY XPERIA, I make phone calls on it and that's all, every now and then it takes a photo of my thumb or the ground. I then have to switch it off and switch it on again to get rid of the camera bit.

I'm stuck handing out Windows phones to all our staff as my predecessor signed a deal for them (and the talk share contract) that lasts for 3 years.
As soon as I can we'll all be moving to Android, not one person here (out of 100 users) has anything good to say about Windows mobile devices lol

I find similar and I did find the poll results very surprising in two ways - the total contrast in the percentage of people with Windows phones (much more than I expected) vs. the number of people, or rather the 1 person out of almost 200, who wants a Windows phone.

Is there an option for "I'd rather not have a phone at all"?? laugh
I have never had a company phone. Would probably decline it if offered.

A quick basic poll around what they offer and what you'd prefer.

I'd be appreciative of any opinions and if it could stay here vs. being moved to the Computer forum as I would like people who don't just have an interest in technology to see it please.

Prefer if it didn't turn into iOS vs. Android, just want to get an idea if there's any obvious trend on both what employers are doing and what employees want smile
don't understand the question. They offer the list available from the provider, up to the value they want to pay them. You don't think companies put a lot of effort into carefully selecting models do you?

Yes.
Some companies rely on timely uploading of CRM^ data etc, to monitor performance of their products and employees in the field.
The easiest way to do this is by giving your droid some software on a phone - which he already needs anyway -so his boss can ask why he is in a Little Chef outside Birmingham when he was meant to be in Northampton an hour ago.

If you signed a SLA^^ with a customer with six or seven figure penalty clause, you want to know the moment your field droid fixes the widget making machine.

If you have five thousand droids in the field, and your CRM software doesn't have an IOS app, or does not display the enter button in the right place or even on the screen on a Galaxy note Mini, then not testing phones first to find this out is not optional.

I renew phone contracts every two years and give all staff a choice of whatever phone they like.

When I joined I was given a Nokia Windows Phone that I'm stuck with for a while longer. If I joined in the last six months I'd get a recent iPhone, I think the 6s? Data is all paid for but has to be for work, no real way they would be able to tell though.

My plan is to switch to my own dual SIM phone next year so I don't have to carry around two phones.

presumably this is either a tiny company or you don't require that they have to access anything at all app or data-wise from the phone?

i mean company apps. What I am getting at is that there is a huge difference between just giving everyone a phone to keep in touch and as a perk, and giving them one so they can access various company-provided apps in order to do their job. With the latter, there needs to be testing, an approved list... loads of hassle. Easier to do BYOD and/or containerisation.

Ah I see, no no company apps. Its a perk really for both staff and the business.

iPhone 5S ... I managed to obtain a good deal via O2 Business and from my perspective, any troubleshooting required on the behalf of a user is easy, as every phone is the same! Aside from that, most of our users are familiar with iPads, so it's the obvious choice for us. smile

Standard issue when I joined in 2014 was a Samsung Galaxy Ace. I endured this for two years and then, when given an additional project involving more travel, requested an iPhone to help me keep in touch when I don't have a Wifi connection. It took much persuasion but eventaully I got an iPhone SE.

Standard issue now is a Nokia Lumia (Windows).

99.9% of us use our own phones. In fact, I think the firm may have stopped providing handsets altogether. Like most of my colleagues, I exceedingly rarely need to talk to someone outside the organisation from a mobile, and it would rarely be acceptable to discuss anything of substance with a client from a mobile anyway. We use free phone numbers to dial into our firm, so there's no cost there. We've got a suite of collaboration tools we can choose to download onto Android or Apple devices that give access to email, intranet, instant messaging and our video conferencing facility. The latter uses a fair bit of data, so it might rack up a couple of quid a month if I use it over 4G a fair bit, but life's far too short to bother tracking that kind of expense.
