Apprenticeship

Hi,
My 16 year old nephew got an apprenticeship at a local garage approximately 4 months ago. The boss from my brother's description seems a tool, he's had a lot of apprentice's over the years and doesn't treat the young lads very well. My nephew has had enough and handed his notice in this morning but before the day finished the gaffer fires him.
Can you do this?

No but hopefully it shouldn't matter too much the college should be able to find him a new employer to continue with his apprenticeship. Better off with a decent employer that one sounds like an idiot.
