Im looking to achieve the impossible and fulfil my career ambition of working for an F1 team on the engineering side of things. I graduated 10 years ago with a 1st class degree in Mechanical Engineering and have been working with my current employer since graduating. I applied for dozens of jobs with F1 teams in my final year of uni/immediately after graduating but never got offered an interview. Ive seen a position come up at one of the teams that has sparked my interest into giving it another shot but could do with some pointers on how to arrange my CV and what sort of things to include bearing in mind there will be little transferable technical knowledge from my current role as a Building Services Engineer.

Are you going in at a graduate level, or expecting to go in at a higher level? What is the role?

I'd be looking to make my skills look as transferable as possible. People management, IT, project management, and emphasise technical ability that can be adapted. Structural engineering should all be transferable, understanding of aerodynamics through air conditioning, preventative maintenance, life testing etc. Without knowledge of you current or the role you are looking at...

Its a position as an aerodynamicist but does not require previous experience to be eligible for the role so id guess they may not look at it as a pure graduate role under my circumstances. My current role is mainly HVAC design and thermal/energy modelling, im an Incorporated Engineer with the IMechE too.

It's been a while since I put in for a job (similar situation to yourself I suppose), but done quite a lot of interviewing of new staff members and can remember the advice of tailoring your CV so it demonstrates that you have experience with the qualities/skills required for the job.

I think there's lots of transferable skills there.

Tune your job descriptions from things like Building services to HVAC design, and thermal modelling, etc. you say they are advertising externally from the industry, so that is positive.
