Is it worth studying engineering with the open univeristy or would it be a complete waste of time?

Not very often is study not worthwhile.

As to your specific question; it depends!

If you know what you want to do after your studies, then it would be best to check with that employer/sector whether they consider your course of study worthwhile. You can also ask the OU for some insights in to where last year's graduates went after that course to check its applicability.

My Mech Eng degree is with the OU. I finished it in 2000 so can't comment on recent courses but at the time I was impressed by the courses. Comparing what I covered with those at conventional Unis I think it stacks up well against them.

It was bloody hard work doing it alongside a full time job but I don't regret going the OU route. Feel free to PM me if you want to discuss.

I've been working on an OU leadership and management degree for a few years. It's not been the easiest thing to balance with work and home life but people have looked favorably on it. Even though I've not finished the degree, just stating that I'm working on it helped me secure my last job.

Do it
I know several people who self studied and have reaped the rewards. Engineering is particularly employable in oil and gas and many other sectors.

Engineering with OU is something I'm seriously considering starting this year (probably next year as life outside of work is hectic at the moment).

Go for it! As said you'll reap rewards and good employers do look favourably on them.
