Good morning all, I'm hoping for some advice from the Ph knowledge base.

I've been self employed for a long time and looking to get back into employment. I need to compile my CV and was hoping to get a few examples or templates that I can tailor to my own requirements.

I'm a trained Vehicle technician ( Jaguar ) and looking to move into Train maintenance. I would appreciate a few pointers to good templates, but not sure if this is the best way ?

I've never really had a CV as I left school and was given my apprenticeship on the basis of my 1 weeks work experience. I then moved within the dealer network where any future employer could find out my abilities and qualifications quite easily via the manufacturer.

So I would like a modern looking CV that I can tailor. I'm looking online, but I am wondering whether employers can spot a template type and think that it is laziness, or am I over thinking things.

Any links or ideas would be great.

Thanks

You're probably overthinking it, find a simple template online and tweak the layout slightly to suit you. Keep it clear and concise, and try not to go over 2 pages of A4. And without wishing to state the obvious, keep it relevant. Employers don't really care if you got a C in GSCE French back in 1993 wink

Keep it simple, and make sure you get across your key skills and where you have used them.

I changed mine when job hunting from a experience based CV to a skills based one and I had more luck instantly.

Good luck!

Happy to provide some feedback once you've constructed your first draft. There's much more to constructing a top-drawer CV than a simple template can offer, but it's certainly a start to allow you to download the basics.

the longer ago it was the less detail you need, increasingly for general CVs the advice is jobs over 10 years ago get less or now detail and GCSEs / O-levles etc just put how many, how many GCSE A*-C /O levels /CSE1 you got and your grades for Maths, English (or Welsh if that way inclined) and Sciences

Thanks for the kind offers and replies. I have 2 friends which have offered to read over it, as they are both in recruitment, but not in the field I am hoping to enter.

I may still take you up on the offers people.
