Taxis in my area do not need an mot test, they must have an mot style test every six months from new but this information is not logged on the government web site.
A vehicle used forprivate hire or as a Hackney cab needs an MOT every 12 months once it is 1 year old, not 3 as for normal cars. It also needs an interim safety check every 6 months.

I think people get confused because the MoTs for taxis and PHVs are often done at the same time and place as the Taxi licensing inspections , there's a few other categories of vehicle that are due MoTs from 1 year old mainly buses, minbuses and ambulances ... ( and for buses on an O licence that;s as well as their periodic inspection to satisfy the traffic commissioners)

...costs are her chair £25
May be a bit of BS going on here (common with self-employed people) - £25 for the chair, especially as it's per day and not per week, in a "fancy" salon and for 12 hour days, is unfeasibly low.
25 quid a day for the chair does sound rather low ...

also expenses may be none trivial bu that depends on what exactly she does .... ( there are big mark ups on the big name products though ... )
Does sound low. My local tonsorial artist will give the whole family (4 of us) a quick trim for about £50. Thats done less than an hour, so extrapolate that to an easy £200-300 per day generated per chair. I'd be amazed if the shop owner didn't want 30% of that minimum.

I may be wrong, but I think the Private Hire cab inspections are decided by the Local Authority. I'm pretty sure that I've heard of some that run a traffic light system. Present a problem car for a test and they are required to be seen more frequently. Present a well sorted car, and they will reduce the frequency of inspections.

It depends on the local authority.

Some test 3 times a year, some 2 times a year, some once a year, using their own facility. Others accept an annual MOT.

Some will require a brand new car to be tested before they issue a licence.

As for the chair rent, £25 per day is low. My DiL runs a salon and she charges more like £50 plus products.

Thought I’d do a quick update on this thread to stop my anger coming out in the real world!!

Said hairdresser still doing the dodge with the SA as still only taking cash, just paid £11k for a wedding through her bank! Told the wife she just put it in and transferred it out!!

Please tell me people at HMRC get notified by the banks of such large deposits??

Doing more days now as it’s “easy money” I’m losing the will with how people still get away with this!!

Anyway rant over, feel a tiny bit better now telling you strangers about it :-)

I'm not convinced that emotion you are experiencing, is anger.

You might want to tell HMRC about every hands-on person you interact with who accepts cash - plumbers, builders, painters, takeaways, yoga teachers, massage therapists, personal trainers. The list goes on.

Good point I should try something different! Being a wage slave to a multi national is never going to make the kind of money I would like, I guess there is something to be said about being entrepreneurial and having a go yourself I ld be to scared if truth be told!

I’m going to put this down to her get up and go and the freedom taking a chance gives you with your taxes!

Is she married? Her husband could be supporting her. I know of a few massage therapists etc who work part-time while their husband slaves away for a corporate.

Oh, probably not relevant in this case then.

Is this much different to a huge world of "contractors" claiming to be outside of IR35 when they're blatantly employees that the "client" doesn't have the headcount budget for?

This is no different to tradesman/builders of old though is it?

The problem arises when one of 2 things happen:

You want to get a mortgage, but cannot prove how much you're earning, or if you can, it's 'dodgy', as it's all cash.

You get randomly audited (less likely).

The more likely scenario, which my missus who's an accountant says is more likely to happen...

You piss someone off and they grass you up to the HMRC & you can't prove your 'lifestlye' is sustainable by the small amounts you owe, because everything is paid for in cash.
'Apparently' - this is one of the many reasons why tax is being made to go digital.

Makes sense but how can they prove that you're actually being dodgy? Askin' for a mate, like*.

* - actually, I'm quite anal about this sort of thing so log everything. #boring
