So I send my details in for a 3 month role.
Agent then duly rings me and first question he asks is what my previous rate was and what my expected rate is?
I explain that my previous rate is confidential and I require what is advertised £x per day.
He is a little miffed at this and says this is up to £x per day.

So my question is this. If it solely seems to be about the money what value does the agent bring to the table.
I have never heard any agent say to clients "I bring to the table the ability to beat down the contractor on rate". It is always about knowledge of the position being recruited / industry / market rates etc etc.

Because everybody values their experience differently to another. Who ever reviews the profiles/CVs with a day rate at the top will inevitably see some oddities like the most experienced CV asking for a middling rate, the most inexperienced CV asking for one of the highest rates. Whilst rate isn't the be all and end all, it give some currency to make an evaluation.
