Out of interest, and sorry for somewhat derailing the thread. What sort of jobs do people do where this is necessary?

We have 9 offices throughout the UK. Sometimes staff have to be seconded from one office to another to implement some kind of project or to cover a vacancy or some other reason. I don't think most people would enjoy staying in a hotel for 3 months so we would normally put them up in a serviced apartment (which is basically a small flat with a cleaner)

To close this out. I've just signed a lease for 6 months.

Because the property is needed as a result of working away and because it is in line with hotel costs, it is not seen as a taxable expense or benefit in kind.

Very much looking forward to retiring my 'big plate' after years of hotel stays, mostly at the same hotel.

To expand on that, and again just out of interest, what office jobs require people to be in the office 5 days a week to necessitate living away? I thought most things had gone remote these days.

Engineering and Construction is still mostly office/site based, although WFH is creeping in slowly I believe.
Can't drive a digger nor lay roads from home.

Although apparently you can engineer/design and draw at home.

But working in an office is better for collaboration, and reading a PDF mark-up is horrid.

Admittedly it's getting less and less frequent post-lockdown but some recent examples from us.

1. IT Infrastructure manager had to stay in Bristol for two months while he was overseeing the fit-out of a new office

2. Facilities Manager had to stay in Newcastle for 3 months to cover the Site manager vacancy

3. One of the Board Directors stayed in Manchester for a couple of months because the North Team was being restructured (lots of redundancies, several unhappy people)

Is this effectively you being moved from your current work location to a new location that you expect to be working at for 24 months or more?
