Job hunting going well so far, got 3 full days of 'probatation' after that they'll make a decision.. so fairly confident ill get offered a job. As it happens 3 or 4 companies are interested.. which leads to my question (which has kind of be answered in another thread, but id still like your views)

job a) team commission, basic 17k (1st yr) commission at 10% of what office bills each both = circa £25,000 based on current earnings (only likely to go up as expansion etc) seems like a nice atmosphere, think i could learn the job well etc

job b) individual commission, basic 13k, seems not as 'friendly' to someone like me who is new to the job this is a factor im considering. But the 3 people interviewing me said that in there first yr they made about 38k, second year about 60k and this year were on for 100k!!!! Big difference in earning potential, but different environment.

My thoughts are to go with a, as I feel i will learn the job and develop better, with the help of the team environment. Do you think its silly to turn down potential extremely good money fairly early on in my career?

Cheers! smile

A.

Learn the job, realize if you are that quick witted sharp sales man. If you are make a tit load of money regardless of what has been said. While making friends and not being shat on every day. Also with team commission there is an element of you get paid for others work if you have a poor month.. Also it means that not every other ahole on the floor is going to stab you in the back to bill another 2k

Then move to a place where the money is better and it still has a nice atmosphere.

Also, don't under estimate how useful a basic can be if things go wrong..I should know.

And also I would take OTE with a huge pinch of salt, how often do you see these jobs 20k basic 60k-80k OTE.. if it were that easy then anyone and everyone would be doing it..

I like realists, I don't want these stupid OTE figures thrown at me as I don't believe any of them, some people will earn this cash and then the figures will be based around said wonder sales man who sleeps with his blackberry ect

Having been an IT Contractor for 16 years my first response is too much!!

I have not used RC's to actually get work for a few years now but I do have to deal with them to get the teams I need. There is something to think of here which is; you are looking at entering a profession that is almost universally despised by the markets it services.

I am pretty certain I could not do the job as I am not at all sales oriented but what I can say as a large consumer of the services (usually about 10-15 contractors a year) BE HONEST and if all you do is chase the dollar you will lose the client. I have lost count of how many RC's I have litterally screwed over for taking the pi55 on margins in my 16 years to date and I will continue to do it.

Agreed but sales based % profit uplift on say the sale of a house, car TV etc is a fact of life and as a rule I have no problem with and yeah agreed they can be a pain in the ass but hey I am no bed of roses sometimes!! smile

The main issue I have always had and most folks who are contractors and then those that have to use the service is the attitude that we will screw the client and the contractor for as much margin as we can get away with.

Recent example and this is by no means isolated: -

I wanted a top flight Programme Manager for an application development programme for a FTSE100 client (I currently run the Global Programme Team) I made the mistake of saying I was willing to pay top dollar (I wanted to put across that I wanted the best here!) I got a guy, fantastic had the refs etc. Anyway he and I were talking at renewal time (3 months in) and I was paying £1000 per day (his refs and exp seemed to warrant it and he had earnt that before I checked!) I found out that he had been down on his luck at the top flight work level and accepted this role from this agency on £600 per day as they had basically lied to him pleading with him to take a lower rate (they originally had said £500 max!) He took it on the lower rate as he needed the work and I was told he was demanding £850 a day (have the evidence in email!)....

THAT is the problem with the industry and you know what no matter what the 'high horse' responses would be to this from those in the profession they would mostly (say 90% plus) salivate at that as a prospect.

Trust me I am 100% conservative in slant and a capitalist through and through - but that IMHO is plain wrong!

Thank you Hepper...this is why I took to a team which already had long standing clients. I work with big names that have been with the company for roughly 5 to 10 years and talking to contractors like yourself Hepper, thats the one thing they hate... the sales pitch.
Thankfully I have so many contractors that keep coming back to me and thanking me for my help I always feel job satifaction that I have got them a job and then think of the commission. I can hear the sales team over my shoulder and some of the things they come out with just makes me ill.

I would pick A, get with a team that you can support and that they can support you.

Good Luck

I have been in the same boat recently and I choose option A. My reason for this is that I am currently an Estate agent and have worked in personal commission and no matter who you work with, for some money they will stab you in the back!!

I choose the company that I felt happy with, at the end of the day money is half the reason i work at a choosen company, if you can work in a happy team where everyone is there to help you will be much happier.

Good luck anyway.

You are all talking about big money... I am recruiting for the hospitality only... It's my econd year. Would any of you guys know how much I should be earning more less? I know nobody to compare it with... My basic is £20 k at the moment, started on £18 k. I feel a bit underpaid as the commission is this sector is much lower than what you are talking about. Thanks in advance for any ideas...

It depends how good you are obviously..

I should think that the sector you are in may be the reason for not earning the big bucks..

I got offered a job with a well known international I.T recruitment firm, you ask the usual questions, how much can I earn etc "alex, our highest paid consultant made nearly £500k last year..."

Then i remembered, they are salesmen and are trying to sell the job to me, i did some more research, asked around the office when i spent my trial day there. NOT for me at all, but id be interested to hear of some success stories in the recruitment business.

Only recruiter i know/know of moans constantly about her lack of money and paying the bills, no thanks.

Recruitments what you make of it. I love my job but as I'm a resourcer my commission is structured differently to say a consultant or an account manager and with the market as it is (quiet) it's a struggle.
As a consultant you have to find the jobs to make the placements so in all fairness if your crap thats your own fault and you won't reek the benefits.

Good Luck with the guys for interviews if you need advice let me know.

From my 1st week there I love it!! really hard, lots to take in but extremyl interested smile

Talking to the guys there the money is pretty damn good after yr 1.. with a few of the lads having bought houses around the ages of 23 purely from working for this firm gives me good vibes! (its team commission)

But the temporary finance market seems to be fine from our perspective.. lots of positions and openings available and of course even more candidates!

I spent a short amount of time working for an international recruitment company which at the time was in the ftse 250.

I originally contacted them as I wished to move on from my current role in IT sales, I was sold a dream of earning £40k-£60k in my first year, being 22 and only being on £35k in my current job it sounded like a good idea. From the day I joined I realised it was a mistake the hours were usually 8-8. The money was awful, I wasn't sucessful I'm the first to admit that but they're weren't any big earners in the company. Most were jumped up failed public school boys on £30k a year dreaming of a TT. The best consultant in our region was billing just under £400k per year, I doubt he was earning above £60k for that, he did crazy hours.

My advice would be not to work for a public company, the bonus structure is poor, and work within a discipline that you are interested in. I did accounting and wasted 18 months of my life.

Don't believe the dream and pay particular attention to the motors in the car park.
