Most taxi drivers are not "salaried employees". The bulk are self-employed and who often own their own vehicles. Therefore, their weekly income levels have to be viewed in the context that many of them will have quite a few costs to fund out of that income -

vehicle purchase and finance
vehicle running costs
licences
rank fees
radio fees
insurances

I know a couple of ex taxi drivers.
They were working 6 days a week an lucky to clear £250-£350 a week, so yer just scraping minimum wage.
One black cab, one private.
Liverpool and Manchester respectively.

I did Taxi driving about 6 years ago in Swindon when I was 'In between jobs'. At the time Radio rent was £90 a week, and the car rental another £140 a week, so £230 HAD to be found every week. When I started doing it it wasn't too bad an earner, I worked for the biggest local mini-cab firm, and 95% of the drivers were 'local' (if you know what I mean smile). On Friday and Saturday nights you would run around like a blue ar$ed fly between 7-9pm, and then again at 1am - 3pm and could easily make £200 on each night. Then all of a sudden there was a huge influx of 'non locals' they didn't know the area, but Sat Nav meant they could find there way around. All of a sudden work dried up and on Fri and Sat nights you would be lucky to clear £100. the rest of the week you had to work long long hours, with hours of boring sitting in your car waiting for a job. You can just about make a living, the trouble is you need to be working when everyone else is doing what people are supposed to do when they work in a normal job - ie going out at night to enjoy themselves!

From chatting to mini-cab drivers, the key to decent earnings is contract work - especially public sector stuff like schools and hospitals. One told me that school work - an hour in the morning and an hour in the afternoon, Mon-Fri - was worth just over £200 per week for him.

Must make a big difference when compared to those who are simply waiting for the radio to go.

Yep - but it's a pre-agreed rate (well above usual fare) for reliable, specific CRB-approved drivers etc etc.
