Am I mad to consider a 90 minute each way commute by car?
Discussion
Can you not drive to a main line station on route thats better serviced with trains to Leeds?
I used to live in Selby & commute to Bradford and it was always quicker to drive through the centre of Leeds than touch any of the motorways around it. Currently doing a 100 mile round commute and looking to move roles as after 17 months its getting a pain in the arse (and the majority of this commute is on the M6 toll road so only takes about an hour on average).

For the last 7 years or so I've been fortunate to work less than 30 minutes (by public transport) from where I live.
However, that's all going to come to an end by Christmas so I've been looking for new opportunities. A potentially really interesting job has come up in Leeds (I'm in Nottingham). The job will mostly be based in Leeds, with some possibilities of working from a satellite office in Nottingham maybe 2 days a week, plus some time at client sites. Realistically, for the first few months I'm going to need to spend nearly all my time in Leeds. My wife's job is Nottingham so moving in the short-term is not really an option.
The idea of spending 3 hours a day in a car does fill me with a certain amount of trepidation. Do any of you guys have a similar commute and, if so, how do you get on with it?
I did a 90 minute car commute into London for over ten years, 15% of the time it was a complete nightmare, but most of the time it was fine. I could listen to the radio, have the roof off on nice days and not sit next to the sweaty trembling idiots eating their smelly pasties and burgers. In awful weather it was fantastic - no waiting for taxis in the pouring rain, no missing the train by minutes etc. However, that's all going to come to an end by Christmas so I've been looking for new opportunities. As noted earlier, the job needs to be a good one and well paid to do a long commute - but assuming that, I wouldn't worry about it too much. It becomes a routine very quickly.
No drinking at lunchtime though - you have to really watch that.
I had a similar commute for about 3 years, and will start again in January. (Newmarket to Canary Wharf). Make sure you have a comfortable, reliable and economical car (planning to get a 320d Touring this weekend). Listen to Radio 4 and see it as a little time to yourself each day.
It isn't easy, but it will be more bearable if you don't dwell on it, just be grateful for the decent job that your driving too.
