Hi all,

Like so many others on here I myself are trying to gain employment as a technician. I have manager to get to the competency based interview stage with Siemens but as being a sparky to trade my feedback stated I was not experienced enough on the hydraulics and rotating parts to progress further.

I have since applied for a place on the wind turbine appreticeship with Siemens and have a psycometric test next month so fingers crossed but if unsuccessful I have a place self funded at college doing the Wind turbine technician certificate whilst still being able to hold down my current job.

Has anyone done the psycometric tests with Siemens that could give me any help on the the type of test to expect, I think it's the SHL tests that are used as that's the link provided on the Siemens website but any advice would be really appreciated.

Also with regards to the guys on here (wind man & escargot) arranging to do the Siemens level 2&3 at Newcastle is this still in the pipeline or have you already done it yet as I could also be interested in this.

Thanks in advance

Hey, I saw this thread when I was searching google for info on high climbing jobs such as a transmission tower climber or a wind turbine tech. I'm 21 and currently working as an aerial guy, wich I've been doing for 3 years now, so have some experience in transmission/rigging. I'm good with cables, connectors, working/concerntrating at heights and used to the cold as I work outside all year even in the snow. I've been on health and safety and safe working at heights courses so Im used to working harnesses and ropes, and used to rock climb as a kid, already do some pretty high work as we're specialist installers so work on triple 25's often so heights don't phase me. Works been gettin quieter and quieter since DSO in our area and could do with a more challenging job. Have no commitments, so working off shore is no problem.
As I was reading the thread I noticed loads of people obviously know a lot about these types of jobs whereas I don't so I would really appreciate it if some one could email me on golfdubbersi@hotmail.co.uk and just give me some basic info on how to go about getting a job like it or what qualifications are needed etc.
Thanks for atleast taking the time to read this, sorry about the essay lol

It's a lot different now to how it was 2 years ago. Previously you could get in with very little experience as a trainee.

However the requirement for a high level of competence and knowledge in specific areas, along with the fact a lot of people with a lot of transferable experience are now applying is making selection tougher and tougher, for example dealing with TV cables and connectors is fairly irrelevant when dealing with High Voltage cables as thick as your leg.

There is also likely to be a slow down between the end of 2012 to around 2014 until round 3 projects start materialising. Its a risky game taking people on when no WTG manufacturer have officially won any of the work.

All you can do is look to apply with the main manufacturers and clients So your talking Siemens, GE, AREVE, Mitsubishi, RES, Vestas, Gamesa, etc... Vatenfall, Dong, Centrica, RWE, EDF, Repsol, etc... The other option is third party contractors like Dawsons, 3Sun Group, etc

Good Luck.

Hi all, I'm currently studying a FD in engineering (specializing in wind turbine technology) and i'm required to do a 3 month work placement within the wind sector.

I am finding it difficult to fulfill this at the minute because i have no contacts in the industry and have to cold call on future employers which isn't ideal really. My background is in construction where i have 15 years experience and ran my own business for 10 years until the property bubble burst.

I took the opportunity to go back to study and have a change of career. I have my working at heights training, First aid at work, Manual handling and construction skills register card with wind turbine safety rules. I am based in Northern Ireland and would appreciate any advice or leads that could be of help to me.
Thanks in advance

Hi all.

New to this forum and hope to be welcome.

For those who have gotten interviews with Siemens, what questions were you asked if you can remember?

As what Bazbiker said - speak/ask for Simon, You will hopefully be able to get a fair bit of work exp in in your holidays with them. Also, if you're registered on Linkedin, connect with B9/Simon (pm me if you want a link) and then you'll get notifications as/when they are needing people.

Good luck !

No, & None - I was in contact with them from around sept time last year regarding their upcoming resource scheme, which basically meant if/when I wanted to book some annual leave I could liaise with them and book it to coincide with them needing extra hands on deck, when the scheme was launched earlier this year I was on the list.

Come feb/march time i saw a job advertised locally that I applied for and got, I am also doing a lot more studying and training courses atm so unlikely that I will be able have 2-3 weeks off at once that I wanted to get some good experience. The job I have got has lots of good potential, and i'm really enjoying it - its local, more supervisory/planning/office based and i don't work away from home, but i would have still really loved to have got onto the turbines.

Alright brother. I was at an assessment interview on Tuesday.

Mine was held at a plush hotel in my local city.

On arrival, you can get some tea and coffee then you given a presentation about Siemens etc and introduced to the Siemens staff who are there. You are then split into two's and given a "Team Building" activity which you are assessed at. Then the interview and then a basic health and safety test.
