Hi guys, I was just hoping to gather some info regarding the siemens travelling technician role, I was invited to the assassment centre a wile back, and after completing that they contacted me and informed me that I was successful, and that they thought i would be ideal for a travelling tech role. Which i was delighted to except, the only thing was, was that the recruiter told me id have to wait till a travelling tech role became available. I was just wondering did anybody else experience this, does anybody have any idea how often the travelling tech roles become available. Am just really anxious to get started at this stage.

I'm a travelling tech, started on site middle of Nov at gunfleet sands. Very steep learning curve once you get going. Had my level 5 course this wk, unfortunately no level 7 courses available next year. Absolutely loving it.
Hi Thomostash was just wondering is there any info you could share with me regarding the travelling tech role, like whats the shift rotation, how much are you away from base, how often does the travelling tech roles become available Thanks

Same thing for me the traveling role was a lot of time down in london living out of digs, plus finding out the pay scale was like getting blood from a stone. If your looking mate try for Oil & Gas work, if you have the skills for wind you will find a job.

Thanks Ron, what sort of shift pattern did you do when you were working as a travel tech? I work along with travel techs a while back and every where they went they lived out if hotels, was this the case for you? Dont know much about the oil and gas side of things, for the minute I'll probably just focus on wind turbines.

You know how many cabins there are on board?
Others back to back share.......
And? Im a grown man, I don't expect to be sharing a cabin with anyone. It hardly makes them premadonnas, just a company looking after its workforce.

Alright mate.....just ignore Ron, he has been banging that oil and gas drum for a while now (probably worth starting another thread for smile )

Shift patterns vary from site to site. I started doing 1 on 1 off but currently I'm at another site working 2 on 1 off. Swings and roundabouts as the site I'm currently working at has a high percentage of weather days so the chances of working 14 days on the spin is pretty much nil, especially at this time of year.

As a travelling tech you are pretty well looked after. You get an allowance for being away from home (currently £26) plus food and digs paid for. Living in hotels can get very boring pretty quickly, but a lot of the guys rent holiday cottages which offer you a lot more freedom. How you handle being away from home is more of a personal thing. Ive spoken to guys who hated it but unless you live close to a site then realistically its the only way you can do it. Personally I don't mind it, but you do tend to miss your family and friends while you are away. The company is poor in regards communication, especially in regards travelling tech management. The business has grown so fast they are currently playing catch up management wise but the will is there and I'm sure this will improve in the future.

Im not sure how often the roles come up. After my interview I was given the choice, I chose travelling as it best fit my own personal circumstances.

Good luck with the job hunting.

FACT! The hardest people ever to pin down on the SIMPLE question of "How much will I be on"?

They sent me a Contract though for a job without telling me! Would you leave a job to start a new one without that Nugget of golden info? They said I would be in Barrow, I found out more like London again not what it looked like!

FACT! I love my job now I have worked all over the world and played with cool boy toys even the odd trip in a supersonic fighter. But I have never been this well looked after / Payed / and Quality of life is the best of all. And I would like to help or may be so that seed in peoples mind that they too might be so blessed.

Nice one mate. I'm glad its working out for you. I just don't think there is a need to be constantly re-posting the same old story.

when on a vessel with 5 or six different companies, and 100 men, the only company that lays it down is Siemens.

PITA as a Vessel operator wink
Good on them if you ask me. Im sure they pay good money for that vessel. I would be wanting a cabin for myself and I'd be happy for them to lay it down.

Two more jobs of interest to me on my works intranet site at the minute, might stick an application in for them, although the last one I put in went unanswered, not even a "sorry you're not what we're looking for" meaning either it never got there or something else happened, lol. We shall see.

Gents in the know..

Can you clarify whether any of the big players would be interested in radar techs from the RAF in this sort of field?

A few of us will be leaving soon and are interested in wind turbine work. I myself work in 3rd primary radar faults and servicing and have a good amount of climbing experience relating to this.

At this stage I'm just intrigued.

Thanks

You probably have the vast majority of skills which would be transferable.

It's no secret that the industry faces a quite period between the end of this year and 2016/17 where new build will hopefully pick up again. There is some recruitment still going on though in some areas. Service operations are still looking favourable.

There have been a lot of service jobs coming up recently almost 60 positions across 3 companies operating from our docks in the last couple of months with possibly more to come. On top of that there have been a fair few coming up around the uk with Siemens. As for ex RAF the skills you mention will be easily transferable,I would say 75% of the techs on our site are ex forces mainly RAF.

Hi All,

I've got an interview as a wind turbine tech in Ramsgate next week.

Can anyone offer me any advice for the assessment centre? What to expect etc.

I have obviously been swatting up on all things Siemens, but am still worried about what to expect.

Any advice very much welcomed.

I've not worked in this field before, but really really want this job.

Thank you.
