Right then smile

I have an interview with the largest construction firm in the UK next month and I need a new suit.

Personally I feel that black suits should only be worn at funerals or dinner parties so I was going to go with a light/medium grey affair.

Thoughts?

Shirt colour of choice would be white with a red 'slim' tie and of course a black pair of shoes.

The job is office/site based with lots of client liasing.

Am I mad?

Personally would stick to darker colours than light grey. Medium grey as a absolute lightest with a tendency towards charcoal. Otherwise white shirt and plain tie is fine. Can't go wrong with grey suit/white shirt/plain tie combo. But not one of those silly fashion skinny ties. And not a 70s kipper either. Just a normal tie!

+1

You don't want a suit that shouts above what you are trying to say.

Make sure the pinstripes are widely spaced too. You don't want to give the interviewer a headache.

I'd avoid wearing a red tie.

If you only buy one suit buy a plain dark navy suit or Charcoal.

You don't sound mad. You sound excited!

You have the right idea about the suit. The shoes should be black, but not "funky". Clarke's brogues would be right.

Think carefully about the tie. I don't know what you mean by 'slim', but if it has something to do with youth fashion, then avoid it. Also, a red tie can be seen as agressive. A light blue tie might be more appropriate.

Go to marks and spencer and buy one, wear it, and return it.

Buy this. You've got the job.

If you're going for a job in a research based post a bow tie wouldn't look out of place.

Balfour Beatty, Carillion or Laing's?

I work in construction, love the industry smile

Suit wise, as above really, a dark suit, keep it simple and fairly plain. You don't want to end up looking like a sales rep.

Based upon overall turnover.

I too, love the industry. Aim to work abroad one day in the not too distant future.

Darker suit it is then. I may have to reconsider the tie, black or blue plain being more sensible options.

Still, keep the opinions coming.

Don't bother with the 'suit' and just wear a nice pair of trousers with a nice plain shirt with a matching tie, black or dark brown shoes (depending on trousers colour) and that will do i recon

I know you won't, but don't take this advice.

And what pray tell is wrong with that?
It's the same as a suit but without the jacket! It's working in construction FFS not in some high flying law firm. It's also nice weather at the moment and a jacket looks too formal and you would be red hot!

It doesn't matter if the role is for a bartender or a lawyer, if you want the job, wear a suit.

Rubbish!

Smart shoes, smart trousers, smart shirt with tie and that would be fine. The jacket is optional, personal preference i would say.
I would never and never have worn a suit jacket for any interview as they don't suit me, but without the jacket i look far smarter.
