Ive been working at Nokia for the past 15 years and today we were told that the majority of UK based activities will be cut.

http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-13210796

Some people will be outsourced to a French company, but the majority will be made redundant. The job market is not looking good for engineering in the UK currently.

Just sharing as i am feeling low.

Did you have to do much writing in your job? wink

On a serious note, sorry to hear about the job!

As I'm temp contracting as an agency employee, on a steelworks that is losing £250m a year, I've been told the same.... Expect to be out of work by summer. (3rd time in 2years, GREAT!)

Sympathies mate. Hope you've got a back-up plan/nest-egg, as only other alternative I've found is word of mouth and agency work, which is no way to build a future.

Well done mate, really funny. Berk.

Unless you happen to work in oil and gas, then the UK is pretty horrid for engineering based jobs - cliched, but still really sad.

Are you too far from Newbury? Vodafone usually have a few jobs on the market, O2 is in slough, 3 is in Maidenhead if you fancied moving, all the best getting a new job.

Fifteen years? That's a bh - after that length of service you'd expect a little more. Times is hard I suppose. Good luck mate.

Vodafone @ Newbury is an impressive set-up. Worked with them for 9months for a uni project, had a couple of visits to them. Was always told they had jobs going there too..... Especially in the high risk growth sectors such as pharmaceuticals

OP - I hope after 15 years there is a good redundancy available. Might be worth looking at Microsoft too - lots of recruitment of mobile comms people going on there at present.

A year ago you told us you were bored and wanted out of your job, and the industry. Did you work out what you wanted to do? Pisser having it forced on you though.

Not sure where the OP is based (didn't click his profile) but there's also Motorola in Swindon, and EverythingEverywhere in Hatfield (T-Mobile) and Bristol or London (Orange).

Nokia have a big HQ here in Farnborough.

Although the OP mentions that they are "outsourcing" to France - aren't they actually a Finnish company? Therefore, their UK operation is already a form of outsourcing.

Jobs are also going at Orange and I suspect T-Mob due to the EE merger. There's quite a few under consultation or being outsourced at the moment.

Oh and relating to an earlier post, since when have Voda been in pharmaceuticals?! silly

Im also at Nokia. We all knew it was coming although that wont make it any easier. Every 6 months its like Big Brother with mass evictions.

If you survived one 'reorg' you knew it wasnt long until the next.

The slight good news is that we should have a bit of time on our hands but unfortunately there does appear to be less and less jobs in Engineering. The wages of the Chinese that we are losing the work to, is rising higher and higher (around 60-70% of UK wages i found) so it cant be too much longer until its no longer as beneficial to outsource as much *clutches at straws*

I think he meant that pharma is one of their big contracts, I work in pharma and we have a dedicated Vodafone support team based here.
