I was about to say! What's the reasoning behind the non uniform model designation anyway?

No it didn't, I bought my E46 M3 in 2002 (a year after launch) and the base price was around £42k.
Actually in 2001 it was £38500 in standard form.

It is not an M1, but a 1M. Get it right!

They called it the 1M because THIS was the original M1:

I would think BMW are 'saving' the M1 badge for something in the future - a possible R8 competitor maybe?

We've established that. But why? Surely there isn't another E26 replacement in the pipeline?

Can't you get a new M3 for £46k? wink
Not to my spec! Even though more stuff is standard on M3, i would still need to add over £3k of extras and thats not including the competition pack.

Plus i don't want an M3, i want what the M3 was, before it became too big and too upmarket.

Must admit though, there are some amazing finance offers on M3's at the moment. But the running costs will also be significantly more than the 1M.
BMW are giving £2.5k worth of extras free with the M3!
Yeah, there'll be a reason for that.

M3? Still a simply awesome car but to me it's now moved up into the M5 bracket. the 1M is my new M3.
I think you're right. I don't understand the need to grow each model at renewal.

BMW Car magazine did a comparison with the E90 M3 and E39 M5 (in May 2008 - my car mag stash is legendary!) and the two are remarkable similar in their stats.

Doh! Is that because they were finding shifting a V8 petrol 18mpg near £60k car difficult ? wink

The 1M and E30 M3 are remarkably similar in shape and dimensions...

The 1M is going to have more exploitable performance thanks to its turbo engine, like it or not

However, as its already been mentioned, you should buy the M3 purely for that engine, its probably the last true great N/A Engine

...You won't even consider an E46 after you have. Maybe not even a CSL!...
I'm swapping out of a mint E46 CSL into the 1M... admittedly part of that is that i always wished the CSL had a manual 'box...

the other part is just the incredible performance of the 1M. think it could be one of the best all-rounders that doesn't feel too grown up as you've mentioned in your previous posts. having driven one for 4 days (have to give it back tomorrow), i can confirm it feels totally different to the standard 135i.

and in my mind, yes, definitely the new m3 (by e30/e46 standards!)

Just to be pedantic, BMW are calling it the "1 series M coupé" - not the 1M or M1. Much like the "Z4 M coupé".

And a base spec M3 coupé is currently around £55k, a base spec 1M (yes, i'm calling it a 1M too) is £40k. And the 1M is quicker in real world conditions.

having driven both I'd have V8 M3 over 1M... it flows better through a set of corners, sounds better and doesnt feel like its got a big TDI under the bonnet!

if you want a sports car buy a sports car, if you want a fast saloon buy an M1/M3/M5

M3 £46k plus £2.5k of free extras!

Not a huge gap and there is more standard spec on the M3 !

I still like the baby M though and if they stick to the 450 build then should hold it's value better than the M3/5s.

On the BMW website the M3 saloon starts at £53k, the coupé at £54k, and the cab at £58k.
There is an offer on at the moment to get a free upgrade to the DCT gearbox, but i don't see £46k anywhere and i don't see the £2.5k in extras - am i missing something?

It has those nasty turbo stickers on the back doesn't it?
ER, no! But tell me more. LOVE the idea of 'nasty' turbos!
Maybe something like this:

Ahhhhhh, sorry; I meant give it a year or two and the halfords crowd will be putting nasty turbo stickers on the back, and dump valves and neon lights etc. My issue is that, it should have nasty turbo stickers on it...
