warranty, warrant, warranty. Please if you are going to buy one of these get a warranty. I didn't and after a year of wonderful ownership my 2007, 50,000 mile E60 engine blew up due to the valves sticking in the open position on pistons 9 & 10.
BMW wanted £34K for a new engine to be fitted, so the warranty would be a lot cheaper!
But I did love every second of ownership. Have an E90 M3 now, which is a completley different car to drive and I love it but miss my M5.
What are you complaining about, it's only £34k...... BMW wanted £34K for a new engine to be fitted, so the warranty would be a lot cheaper!

I presume the car got broken or sold on cheap?
I'm big into the cosworth scene, what you generaly find is that cars like the sapphire cosworth are frequently broken for parts because they are 99% the same as escort cossies and most parts are interchangeable with other cossies and sapphires used to be able to be bought very cheap (most of them dirt cheap ones are gone now though) and broken and sold for far more than what you paid for the whole car. The E60 M5 is a prime example of this having see some early cars dipping into the 13 and 14k price bracket, parts are so expensive it will be good business to break them.
Question to E61 owners. Something that has been bugging me, I see on the back of my car under the rear bumper is a cutout section. It looks like the one in this pic and I can't help but think that there is a mesh grille missing as it looks so wrong.
It sounds a daft question but it looks unfinished!

Hi,
Can anyone tell me if the TV in the E61 are Digital. I have a E39 540i and my TV doesn't work now they've switched off the analogue signal. Don't want to pay for something that doesn't function.
This forum is so useful for a novice prospective buyer of an M5. Thanks...
Also, has anyone solved the issue of the 7 digit postcode not working with the sat nav?

Yes, i believe the TV function is digital. Not sure how the retune last year has affected the system in these cars though. Can anyone tell me if the TV in the E61 are Digital. As for the postcode, you just need to know the name of the street for when the postcode gives its options. SatNav is actually pretty good.
Hey Eddie,
I hope you get to see this note as i know you wrote the article on the M5 Buyers guide back in 2011, but i am only reading it now.
I have owned my M5 E60 (Black with Black) since last August 2012. I changed from a CL600 Merc into the M5 as i found that whilst the CL was as powerful it was in a nutshell...boring. I needed four doors as i have three kids to school each morning and got fed up with the usual morning fight not to sit in the back seat of the CL.
Like a lot of my petrol head friends we change our cars ever few months ( a sickness in itself ). On purchasing the M5 i wondered to myself how long this one would last. Well over the last few weeks i had already begun testing Porsche Cayanne's GTS, ML63's etc...but each time i got back into the M5 i couldn't help thinking that i still preferred what i had. Even the dealers i had the test drives with complimented the M5. After much thought i have decided to keep the it. There simply isn't anything else out there that puts as big a smile on my face. I love the noise of it most of all and the connivence of it all, kids, schoolbags the lot.
in deciding to keep it i opened my computer and now want to give it a treat. I came across your fantastic article and it has helped me so much. I especially like the section on exhaust systems and am now emailing Eisenmann and Meistercraft. I love the sound but also the shape of the exhaust tips etc. I feel it will give my 2006 car a more up to date look.
I wanted to ask your valued opinion on power upgrades? I don't want to go crazy. I came across Thorney Motorsport offering a 20 bhp upgrade but promising an overall better performance. Can you or anyone else out there comment please?
Also what about gearbox / gear change upgrades? are there any out there i could consider. Is it possible to get a smoother change in traffic as i spend most of my time in traffic.
Finally can i add to my above comments about my car preference and regular changing of cars, that after owning ever type of car (ferraris, porsches, bentley's etc etc) that for the first time i actually feel that this car is a keeper!
Now thats a big statement from me!
Many thanks again for you time and efforts into your buying guide on M5's, it really is a fantastic reference.
Regards
Liam Hennessy

Welcome Liam and gret review of a wonderful car. I must admit mine makes me smile and I'm also looking down the exhaust route too. Eisenhaus and Eisenmann are a bit over my budget but boy do they sound awesome! There are a few other options including H&S (Hayward and Scott) and a simple silencer delete which would make it sound as loud as the Eisenmann. A few gents on here have had it done and posted some soundclips.
Gearbox mods? Is yours a manual? The SMG box should not be played with at all!
As for the remap option there are some on here who have used DMS as they seem a reputable company so might be worth contacting them, There was also a talk of a group buy at one point. BHP gains will be minimal imo.
Anyway look forward to hearing more stories about your upgrades

Am struggling with the search function, so apols if the answer is somewhere obvious...
How much oil do I need to supply with the car when going in for a service?
Give them 10 litres and expect around 1 litre of change if they don't have to do too much flushing. How much oil do I need to supply with the car when going in for a service?

I've never seen them on an E61 so would be interested to see a picture!
I've had mine for a year now, its in for a service tomorrow but we may have to sell due to a new business idea we're working, so if anyone is interested in a space grey Touring with a year's AUC warranty on it, drop me a note. I suspect I'll get it advertised on here shortly.

Hi Guys being a new owner of 2006 plate e60.
I was wondering about extra sound, as you do. Heard about the muffler deletes.
Wondered does this not mess with the engine management, the change in back pressure etc.
I've been in a deleted car and it did sound nice.
The simple answer is at first the ECU can back the power off until it adjusts. Andy GT on here had the silencers deleted and had exactly that issue but a week later the car was back to normal. I am doing the delete mod ASAP so will let you know how it goes with mine!I was wondering about extra sound, as you do. Heard about the muffler deletes.

I've removed my muffler delete from my E60 M5 as my car is now up for sale and this will be sold soon, feel free to message if someone wants it? I haven't had any power issues with it, and IMO fitting the OEM back on the car feels a tiny bit slower than it did with the muffler delete
Mods - feel free to remove if you wish,a classifed ad will be put up for it on here
