Had my silencer delete done now, paid just over £200 for it so not too bad. Contigo's guy would have almost certainly done a better job (see below) but as they were just down the road, they've saved a lot of fuel cost.

However, despite my instructions to the contrary, they apparently weren't able to keep the existing tailpipes, so I've now got two pipes rather than four.

It looks bloody weird, but does sound chuffing awesome. So, the question becomes, do I leave it as two pipes (and thus make the car look more like a sleeper) or try and find a couple of twin-exit tail trims to stick over the top?

Yeah, pretty much. It's growing on me as a look, but I totally should have just used your guy even with the fuel cost.

Ah well, you live and learn.

//edit: Do you have any pics of yours from underneath, Contigo? Would be interesting to compare what they've done with what your guy would have done. I'll get a pic of mine when it stops bloody raining.

Mine was simple as I instructed him to do it. Cut the 4 silencers out and simply replace with 4 straight through pipes. Could not be simpler. How on earth they have no rerouted your 4 pipes into 2 really does beggar belief!

It really does seem weird gazchap. Have you kept the original tips?

You get to the bottom of the jerky gear changes?

I suspect it's because he didn't want to make too many cuts in the original system so it'd be easier to weld back on if necessary, as he's given me the silencers and pipes etc. back - I've got the tips, the silencers, and the bits of pipe coming off the other side that meet up in the middle.

Jerky gear changes - all fine now, I've not done anything to it. The "slam" when pulling off has stopped too, although I suspect that's because I've got in the habit of pressing the footbrake before moving off to prime the release bearing, or whatever it was smile

Wow - this is a fantastic thread !! Top Marks to you giys for putting this together. bow
I've just started looking at either an M5 or an M6, £20/25k budget.. leaning towards the M6 for some strange reason...

I presume a lot of what you have written is relevant to the M6 as nearly all the mechanicals, electrics, clutch, gearbox, drivetrain etc. will be identical (just really bodywork and interior different ??)

Been driving a E46 325Ci for many, many years with great reliability, and had two TVRs (T350 & Sagaris currently) so used to budgeting for bills etc. Keeping the Sagaris, and want the M5/M6 for the days I can't/don't want to use the Sag, plus motorway journeys.

I'm in Berkshire - do you guys meet up occasionally anywhere so I can get to see and talk about these awesome cars to learn as much as possible before I jump in ??

Cheers, Mike

Welcome onboard (well soon as you won't be able to resist). I'm in Berkshire, Newbury so if you want to look around an M5 then let me know and we'll see if that can be arranged.

Hi Red Spike
Agree this is a great 'down to earth' thread (unlike many others which end up with one person personally going hammer & tongs with another for some reason!)
I work in Wokingham if you fancy a spin in one.... I am at the first stages of Thinking about moving my beloved (dare I say "cherished") E60 on if that is of any interest to anyone reading this thread - reason being I need a "weekend car" + normal boring daily drive as I am really conscious not to put too many miles on the M5 (currently 60,000). Seem to be commuting to the office a bit more these days and doesn't seem right to commute in the M5.
Not to 'Hijack' this thread but thinking about <please don't stone me> Boxster S (something the wife can also drive) + other £5000 work hack.....
Possibly the most reluctant thought that has ever entered myhead but it's the only honest reason for even considering it... the M5 has been completely faultless and I'm sure I'm not alone in the "do I / don't I move the M5 on" dilemma.
Cheers
JB

Can't get under it, but this is the back. I was torn, but now I'm hacked off with it and want the original pipes back on. I think I'm just gonna take it back to the place that lopped them off, ask them to weld the original bits back on, and then do what they should have done in the first place and just cut out the silencers.

OMG, that is horrific, cant believe they actually left them like that, criminal! I would not be happy with that outcome, and they would know about it!! Get it back and get them to rectify their dodgy workmanship!

Won't name and shame (as per PH rules) but they're a motorsport garage in Shrewsbury, who have done some damn good stuff with other marques and vehicles, but I guess they'd just never done this to an M5 before.

Now wondering whether I should just bite the bullet and get an aftermarket exhaust. Other than Hayward and Scott, are there any other reasonably priced aftermarket jobbies for the E61?

Nothing tried and tested is cheaper than the H&S boxes.
