Great work this topic, especially the part on common problems en dealing with them. I have a question about the winter tyre options though. For the summer I have 20" Hartge wheels, so I would like to use the OEM 19" rims on my E61 M5 for winter tyres, but BMW says it's impossible to use snow chains when these wheels are used. But wouldn't it be possible if one were to use a smaller tyre(i.e. 235/265 mm fr/re), as this will result in more fender clearance as well as a slightly lower sidewall. Do you think this provides enough space to use snow chains? On the packaging it is said the chains ad about 8 mm to the wheel, but I do not know if this becomes more when the wheel is turning around...

Thanks in advance for your comments!
David

Snow chains are a no-go on the OEM 19's, however i think there are chain sets that will fit on the OEM 18" Winter Wheel and Tyre package. See www.bmminiparts.com for details. The 18" wheels for the M5 are the only ones that will fit due to the caliper clearance.

Great guide, I'm in the market for a touring at the moment and it's just what I need.

I assume the touring is the E61/facelift model?

Excellent going to see one tomorrow. It's got a BMW warranty on it until Sept 12. Can the used BMW warranties be extended at the end of their term? I have had warranty direct on cars before and the'yve been quite good but won't cover a clutch as has been said on here before. The one I'm going to see had a new clutch at 48K and it on 66K now.

Any pointers and info for what to look for beyond what's been said on the buying guide?

thanks

Not really, if anyone has anything further they normally just wang it up here. As for warranties beyond 60k you'll have to check with Mondial / BMW Insured before you buy the car. The limit on new warranties is normally 60k but if its an AUC car this may be different seeing as you plan to extend. Nothing a phone call wont get to the bottom of.
