Not as much, but it will in the distant future because it will serve as a manual alternative to its bigger/newer sisters.

Not at all. Heard of the 3.0 Si - amazing car in its time, but big, heavy cars don't fare so well on the appreciation ladder.

much better car than the 3.0 si

the E39 M5 IS an all time great BMW - its not rare enough to be mega bucks in the near future, but prices will rise over time, particularly for (already rare) low mileage/ few owner examples. In 10 years people will really want to see / hear them for what they are - proper monster V8s before technology sanitised driving...

If I could get a 2002 20k miles with a FSH and a warranty i'd consider one, but not pay more than £15k.

Yes, that was what I was trying to say. Last of the proper manuals, that will count for something. Also in the Ferrari world, the demand after the manual F430s (last of the manual Ferraris) are starting to increase slightly. These type of trends will continue to increase in the future, because everything these days is coming with flappy pedals. At some point 7-9 out of 10 E39 M5s will be beat down cheap cars owned by people who cannot cope with the maintenance costs, and the ones with proper history and original condition would be able to demand a small premium.

This is a true enthusiasts car, no doubt. (Me personally, I would loved an E28 M5, because it's the first of the breed and ultra rare).

Definitely go for it, noisy on start up but no discernible noise on the motorway, sounds glorious when you give it the beans though! :-)

It's when you start thinking of it's replacement, that you really understand how good the E39 M5 is.

Some might say the natural progression is the E60 M5, but I'm not keen on the interior, the SMG or the plethora of options in the idrive system. Plus I don't think it's worth my M5 and £15k+

I think there will be more than a few owners that'll shed a tear or two, when they eventually move on from their their trusty M5s. Me included.

We best make the most of it then!

That is the problem what to buy to replace my E39 M5, mine is a facelift model but it will still be 12 years old in Novembereek We don't use it as the family car as the wife says its old fashioned !! They do look a bit dated to be fair. For an old car with over 100k miles it drives so nicely though, i love the fact that you can just drive around in comfort and a relaxed fashion and when you feel like it light up the rears ! I've had 2 M3's previously and would never go back to one as i prefer the size of a big saloon car and the better ride comfort.

I do like the look of the E60 M5 and the V10 soundtrack. Most decent E60 M5's with lower mileage and warranty seem to be up around 22k for a good one, my M5 is probably worth around 7k so thats another 15k plus the extra running costs of more fuel, more insurance, more car tax and massive depreciation.

I've had my M5 for 3 years, i'm tempted to buy a newer car( E60 M5,RS4 estate,Lexus IS-F,) but also tempted to refresh mine a little with new factory shocks, front discs, hybrid tv tuner etc etc, that will be nearly 2k in parts but it would mean i could hang onto it for a bit longer.

Oh what to do ??

Simon.

I can't see a 'normal' purchaser buying at that price, there are plenty of lovely ones about that are probably 9/10 as good as that for less than half the price. As has been speculated, I think that's off to be stored by an invester for the future. Maybe confused

I've said this on many occasions but I didn't really find it a great car, okay but was pleased to sell it to be honest.

Over hyped in my opinion.

But then you were admittedly expecting a bit much coming from a bike.

It's a 1.8 tonne road car.

Motorcycling aside they way Evo magazine described was far from my experience, glad I've owned one but wouldn't have another.

The new owner is happy though apart from the brakes.

I suppose it depends what you want from a car, i like the 996 with GT3 aero kit but you can't seat 4 adults in comfort if needed and its no good for going to B&Q ! When the wife is away in the family car i can still use my M5 for almost any occasion. I quite like the Evo 9 but couldn't put up with the poor ride quality and cheapo interior. I suppose the only similar car to the E39 M5 is the same age Jaguar XJR ? Never driven one so can't comment.

I don't know what your M5 was like but their are a lot of really crap ones for sale that probably drive horribly and the owners will just keep spending on them constantly if they've bought a duffer which will not make for a good experience.

Its good that everyone has different opinions, i have a friend who owns his own garage and he is into his cars,we both have track cars so like a good day out at Lydden hill but he doesn't rate any M5 he prefers the Jap stuff ! I have another friend who owns his own garage who has an R1 (really into his bikes) he keeps refering to my M5 as ''that old German Sierra'' !!!!

The one thing I was pleased with was the cleanliness and condition of the car 54k on the clock and had been owned previously by 1 other owner, she was a 1999 model and I had looked at so many sheds, face lifted and non face lift that I couldn't not buy it, paid over the odds. She sold within 2 weeks which is another reason to get a clean one.

But as you rightly say everyone's different and if I hadn't of had one then I'd have never of known, this is Pistonheads after all.

I will leave BMW alone now though had an M3 and M5 and didn't really rate neither, I will purchase with more thought rather than a quick test drive and what jorno's plus what the net say's in the future.

Fair enough 996, you didn't like yours (mainly because of the brakes from your threads/posts) - as you say, life's about different opinions - sure the OP will make his own mind up. I must admit though, I've not come across anyone else who's bought a decent M5 that doesn't rave about it smile

Hope I'm not given the wrong impression not trying to put OP off, we ve all been there when you want a toy you'll get it regardless.

They have been 3 or 4 unhappy owners on general gassing, didn't really rate them either.

I find ths really a bit strange the way 996 sps seems to hang around the M5 section bad mouthing a car that has absolutely masses of fans, If you really hated the car so much why not just move on and buy something else... For every person who was unhappy with an M5 Im sure you will find 100 that would not swap or sell their car for anything else, I also read the Evo test that you read and I agreed with most of what thet said, I dont believe they would gain from trying to hype the car, I honestly believe your opinion was distorted coming from fast bikes, Im not trying to be confrontational, Im just trying to portray to any potential purchaser what a fabulous car the M5 is, and hope they're not swayed by one persons negative posts.
