My belief is if we all loved the same cars then it would be dull.

The brakes are the weak point but enough for me for non-prolonged fast road use.
Agreed.

Obviously some sensitive souls on here, still glad I brought one though........oh no bought, got be careful in the M Forum spelling is more important than a opinion of a car.

Agree with all I the above. Loved mine, epic car etc etc. The whole of the E39 range was so well engineered that it's hard to see it being repeated. Wasn't the 528i autocars best car in the (real) world a few years running?

I'm sure the fact that the last two M5 haven't won people hearts in the same way has helped the E39 M5. If the next M3 isn't up to scratch we will probably be same the same about how great the E46 or current M3 is.

Yep and from what I hear there are a lot of unhappy customers regarding the new M3. I still like the look of the E46 M3.

If I could have a E39 heritage interior into my E61 M5 - that would be the best M5 ever...

Personally, I think the chasis of the E39 is a bit slow witted compared to the E34 and E60... But for overall Jekkyl and Hyde appeal, it is hard to beat. Particularly at the £10k price point...

E39 M5 is the benchmark to which all other Uber Saloons want to get too quality build great styling and in std form awesome out of the box there is nothing to really compare it to I have a prefacelift car and I love it to bits however if someone wanted me to part with it I would but it would only go for a large family SUV like an Audy Q7 or a Merc GL420 I know but have a big family and have to think of these sacrilegious thoughts

I owned the OPs car before him: Put about 65000 miles in it in just over 5 years and it was / is fantastic car - subtle, quick, roomy, practical and a lovely drive whether you're pootling or pressing on.

I have never kept any car as long as I did the M5 because I always fancy a change after 2 or 3 years tops. With the M5, I had the rear boxes removed and visited AmD after about 4 years of ownership. Epic sound and fun!

Only sold it in the end because after a house move, my annual mileage went up to about 17,000 - 18,000 pa. Would like to have kept it as a second car but couldn't quite manage that unfortunately.

Keep enjoying it OP!

Just bought mine and I love it. I wish I'd bought one sooner, although I've had fun getting to this one with a Lotus Sport 160 and a 968CS. Not sure I'll be looking for a replacement for some considerable time!

Got to love the E39 M5, I tried a couple recently but have settled on an E36 M3 (found a 4 door), for a practical 4 door car that can do it all they are extremely hard to beat and they are so cheap its ridiculous. that said an E36 M3 is even cheaper! smile

This thread cost me about 5000 pounds. Just sold my old 330i and bought a nicely specced 2002 m5. Bloody fantastic motor and a delight to ferry the family around in too...perfect. Honestly cannot believe its a 10 year old car. If they sold these today they'd still sell!
