V8A*ndy said: All those people posting the "dislike" of the 1M power delivery please tell me you have actually driven the car.
It's not just about the characteristic of the engine but how it actually interacts with the other dynamics of the car.
I've driven loads of Ms and there is just nothing like the 1M.
It's retro, capable, useable, affordable to run and just plain nuts to drive.
How anyone could get "bored" of this masterpiece is beyond me.
I will be first to stand up and admit that I hated the very idea of this car and was more than a bit miffed to find out the wife had bought one over an M3.
Then I drove it! Was I wrong or what? Totally agree! Everyone is entitled to their own opinion, but it should be based on fact (i.e. you need to have driven the car). Firstly there are no issues with the power delivery. Watch the most recent Autocar video online where Steve Sutcliffe says that it's like driving a big engined car and if you didn't know it was turbo charged, you probably wouldn't notice due to the superb throttle response. None of the motoring magazines have picked up on this peak power vs revs issue being debated here and none of the 1M owners on here have either. It's simply not an issue with this car. In fact Evo said in their last fast fleet report "bury the throttle in third from 2000 rpm and very little can keep up. Even super cars." Evo were so blown away by their 1M that they tried to buy it from BMW and I've never heard that happen before for a long term press car in a motoring magazine. But as Andy has said, this car is not all about the power, the chassis setup, the way it turns in, the way is drives is just superb. I came from a Lotus Exige to the 1M and as a drivers car, there is little between them. High praise for a 4 seater coupe vs a stripped out track car! Also, just because it's forced induction, doesn't mean it's not a proper M car. Chris Harris summed it up by saying "this is a proper M car. M cars are not about the engine but rather the chassis". Of course it's British nature to dislike the latest version of anything. When the next M5 comes out people will moan that it wasn't as good as the last one, exactly what they say about the current M5 and the E60. Anyway I'm not trying to change anyone's opinion of the 1M but I do feel the need to defend it as it is a superb petrol heads car and isn't that the reason we all post on here?

Well I have only see 2 since I got mine in September last year, yes it nothing of a occasion to drive like my f430 but good god its fun ! Completely agree. All this tosh about revs is rubbish too - on road I want instant grunt as early in the rev range as possible and preferably even if I'm in the 'wrong' gear. And no, it's not 'special' and isn't and 'occasion' but as you say the 1M is FUN. It's not "tosh", it's a difference of opinion! I find that cars with a big slug of "instant grunt" are the ones that i become used to, and hence bored of, equally instantly. Grunt which you use less often, because it's less accessible, means that i don't get bored because the sense of acceleration doesn't become familiar. It's the same reason i don't enjoy driving big diesels like the 335d (however fast they are in the mid range). They simply have nothing left to give when you push them. Poor phrase on my part - apologies! BUT. Drive a 1M before saying you'd become "instantly bored with it"! I've driven most things and the 1M is RIGHT up there for fun.

You said "I find cars with a big slug of instant grunt are the ones I become used to, and hence bored of, equally INSTANTLY". I didn't appreciate "instantly" meant after 10,000 miles! Would you really get bored of big capacity V8 in a GT40 or Cobra for example. All that boring instant grunt. Any old how, the weekend beckons - so have a good one matey. And try to get a drive in a 1M then tell me what you think. Cheers

if the answer to all three questions is "yes" i might have to re-evaluate I am the sort of person that gets bored quickly. In the last 6 years I've had 4 new cars (including the 1M) and the other three cars have been at interesting (MKV Golf R32, Elise SC and Exige 260). However the 1M is just so interesting and fun that after 6000 miles (and I only covered 8000 miles in he Exige before selling it) I can't wait until the next time I drive it. I've took it to Brands back in Feb and it was great fun! The grip, handling and balance really impressed me for a four seater car. Seriously go and drive one

Agree with all points. I love high revving cars, but I can't ever see myself getting bored of my 1M's massive hit or torque - it's a load of fun. The 1M is a very special all round ability car IMO, has one of the nicest straight six engine sounds and seems to be a rare sight - haven't seen one other 1M on the road in my area..... Yes I am (too many to list here) pilchardthecat said: Do you understand the point i was making about accessibility breeding familiarity and leading to boredom? No (but I've had my 335D Sport Auto four years now, and it's still fun to drive) It turned 100K miles today, I still enjoy the way it goes and the way it drives) pilchardthecat said: Is it still fun after 100,000 miles? Yes (see above) I think you may need to re-evaluate despite all three of your questions not being answered with a yes. I've just bought a 1M Coupe, I can't see myself getting bored with it anytime soon (but then I did 30+K miles in three years in an M3 CSL too)

I've got the full Evolve Stage 3 including the exhaust. Really pleased with it - nice sound, good fitment. As to the general debate, BMW Car mangazine's editor drove my car recently and at the end of the article declared it his new favourite M car...

Pugland53 said: Impressive figures. I'm so tempted to get mine done. My main concern is the standard car struggles to put its power down in 1st and 2nd gears. What must it be like with all that extra power/torque? I thought it would be worth adding that the tyres on the car as standard (the Pilot PS2) I "believe" have now been replaced by Michelin with a newer model (Pilot Super Sport). A lot of people have reported back that with the Super Sports fitted, the traction control takes a lot more provoking in order to activate it. When I come to replace my tyres, I'll be going with the Super Sports

Hi everyone I too have a 1m and I am totally in love with it! As Chris said totally impressed for a four seat car I have a eisenmann race system, intercooler, evolve remap, suspension and brake upgrades on mine and do alot of trackdays and can honestly say it is definately a drivers car power delivery is frantic, handling sublime if a little edgey you have to be on your toes with this car or it will bite you with the t/c off! Anybody slagging this car off as not a proper m car and because it's boring has not driven one! Like Chris I also had an exige 260 cup I much prefer the 1m though even on track. It's all about the fun baby!

Bit more info on tyres..... The final report in Autocar about Steve Suttcliffe's long term 1M (mileage nearly 15k when returned to BMW) - he stated the following regarding tyres..... "First I swapped the original Michelin Pilot Sports for a set of more focused and rather more expensive Michelin Supersports. These made the ride a little bit smoother, the steering half a notch crisper, especially on turn-in and the wet road grip considerably better" ChrisBuer said: I thought it would be worth adding that the tyres on the car as standard (the Pilot PS2) I "believe" have now been replaced by Michelin with a newer model (Pilot Super Sport).
