Just caviat myself enormously.... thhis picture was taken on the rather wonderful A5 by Frankfurt.... I really think we could learn a thing or 2 from the Germans frown

A female friend of mine was done for 138mph on the M11.

When asked in court if there were any mitigating circumstances, she looked straight at the magistrate and said:

"Well Sir, it had just been serviced, with new front brake pads.

And the tyres were top of the range Michelins!"

The look on the magistrate's face (and mine I'd imagine) was priceless!!

{She received a 28 day ban and a £300 fine}
Of course she fluttered her eyelashes smile I reckon she did pretty well there.
In addition to the brake pads and Michelins, I wouldn't be too surprised if she had big airbags ?

speeding has for a long time been the most terrible of crimes attributed to almost all fatal accidents apparently.
Well it is much easier to be killed by a moving vehicle than a stationary one...

"Speed was a contributing factor to the incident..."

So was mass, but we don't get fined or jailed for driving with the tank and boot full do we?

Hefty fine and temporary driving ban (with the attendant deleterious effects upon insurance premiums) sure, I agree that a custodial sentence seems disproportionate in this instance.

The punishment doesn't fit the crime surely?! A prison sentence seems very harsh. Would a knife-wielding mugger get the same punishment?
No, because they would go to great lengths to prove that he was a victim of our society and deserved our sympathy.
He would have had a troubled upbringing, giving him every right to mug who he wishes.
The mugging victim would just be unlucky to have met this poor deprived soul.
I know it does not make sense, but this is how it works these days.

150 in an M5 is worryingly easy.

I touched 140 last month on a very straight clear stretch of motorway and when I slowed down to 90 it felt slow enough to get out and walk!
Try delimiting it and it still feels slow. I delimited my M6 at Hartge when I bought it and ran 200MPH on the autobahn on several occasions. It felt quick enough but 150 felt like walking. We did a series of run with two delimited M6s and we basically hit the limit of wind resistance. On one run we hit 337 km/h and 7700 RPM in 7th. I have frequently run 185 MPH in other cars. Evidently, I pick the location, time, traffic and weather, but it is something I do periodically and legally. as well as on tracks, of course.

Obviously the speed limits in the UK are there and there are consequences to breaking them. Fair enough. However,an empty stretch of road with a properly prepared car on the right tires and a reasonable amount of experience is not an invitation to carnage or madness. I often read exclamations of chock and horror here which rarely take any account of the conditions under which the speeding took place, which seems odd on an enthusiast forum.. This is not a plea for leniency - I know the law and its penalties.

It is rather amazing that you can go to Germany and legally travel at 150+ in sections of the autobahn.
You then come back via the tunnel and 85 on the M20 will net you a £60 fine and 3 points.

I think the punishment is madness.
In this day and age with the type of cars we have and the design of them 100mph is almost nothing in the hands of a half decent driver; even 150mph is fine. By decent I mean a careful and safety concious person.

They should have variable speed limits all over the country - they have plenty of signs up to tell us useless crap however putting up variable speed limits is out the question. go figure.

The speed should be based on condition - weather - traffic - time and set a speed limit - in the middle of the night, clear sky, dry, capable car - i see no reason for a variable limit to not be at 100. this doesn't mean everyone has to be at 100 but at least people who want to and can are able to.

also the driving test should be longer, more difficult and should teach learners more - skid pan, all weather training as well. look at swedish drivers.

Fixed that for you.

Speed limits are aimed at the lowest common denominator who use our roads.

But we've been here before over at SP&L.

Until the majority of road users accept the need for further tuition at some point in their driving career, nothing will change for the better for the individual with above average skills who knows how to handle a fast car in appropriate conditions. And even they are likely to run out of talent at some point if attempting this for prolonged periods.

How can intelligent people decide which laws they respect?

That is the whole point of living in this society you abide by legislation written 50 years ago....

Well yeah, basically you're right on one point, the accident stats will feed back to the government of the day's performance figures.

And then there's all the emissions tripe that would have you believe that less right foot will save the polar bears, while China continues to build a town the size of Stoke-on-Trent every week with no emission policy to speak of. But I digress.

The main stumbling block, certainly for this country as to speed limits being reassessed upwards is the number of people whose driving is so poor, that they would never pass their test again without a load of lessons, the ones who think car ownership is a right rather than a privelage.

Until the driving standard of your average motorist can be raised, I'm just happy with the current bunch of limits. Anyway, who's going to pay for the driving standard increase? That would be another electorate issue.

Finally, beware of politicians advocating a speed limit increase.. expect every new car to have a black box fitted, expect an FPN for a 1 mph transgression!

Me, I like things just the way they are thankyou.

As for the guy who got caught, unlucky son, but I really don't know what your talent threshold was, so pay up and live to drive another day. smile

I used to live a mile up the road from there in Dorchester...

The cops used to be out there most weekends, normally spotted on the first major slip-road as your heading out of Dorchester towards Poole/ Bournemouth.

We've had many guy's stopped in vans there over the years and most locals should be well aware that it is well policed.

If the guy really is from Weymouth he sounds like he is due everything that was thrown at him :-)
